So I took Macworld's advice & purchased an Epson Perfection 2400 scanner. So far so good except I was unaware that in order to scan 4x5 transparencies, I need to purchase a $100 adapter. That would bring my total price to $300. Does anyone have experience with this adapter? Would I be better off purchasing a different scanner that already has an adapter included? I'm looking for a flatbed scanner that scans decent transparencies. Any recommendations? My price range is from $200-$400.
Thanks in advance.

Here is a review that might make you happy: scanner-reviews
Seems I can't let go of my scsi UMAX and run it on an older 8500. Thinks you did ok.

Here's what I read about UMAX: back in the day (whenever they entered the scanner business), they sold top-of-the-line scanners at bargain basement prices. They advertised this. A few people I know bought these terrific scanners at a great price, and have been buying UMAX ever since, that is, until about five years ago. They entered the market strong by selling great scanners inexpensively, but then started gradually making crap. UMAX scanners right now are crap. I know of several people who bought UMAX scanners, thinking they were buying from a dependable company, only to have the scanners break within two years. Everybody I know who bought UMAX is very unhappy. Personally, I bought a very cheap Agfa scanner (they just left the North American scanner business), and it works fairly well. It scans photos decently, it was $70 three years ago, and I can return it to a Costco if it breaks.

If you want a step up from the 2400, get the Epson 3200 for $379.95.
It has a built-in 4"x9" Transparency Unit and 3200x6400 dpi. USB 2.0 and Firewire, too. it comes with Adobe Photoshop Elements and SilverFast SE 6 with NegaFix. Very nice...

Have to agree UMAX is NOT up to par any longer, but when I bought the beefy PowerLook in mid '90s ($1800) nothing in that price range came close to the quality that puppy produced. The 35mm negs came out sweet...and still do. Not sure I'd call $1800 basement prices either, but got back every penny ...

Does anybody know anything about the new (I think) Epson Stylus CX 5200 all-in-one scanner/printer/copier?
$164 (lowest price found) seems almost too good to be true.
Biggest concern: How does it work with OS X (10.2.4)?
Sorry if I'm doing this wrong; first time.

Hi Jim...actually you should have clicked on 'Post' and created a new subject, which would create a new thread for your question: Anyway, just hooked up the CX 5200 for this gal running 1GHz G4 tower and it runs nicely w/ 10.2.4. Went and snagged the drivers from Epson's site first. If you run Photoshop make sure you snag the proper drivers (2) of them, scanner, printer.
