OK, my wife's iMac arrived today...we're finally both on OS X. I'm trying to set up our network the way I want now, and it's a new experience for me. We've always been able to share files and log into each other's computers and such, but I'm hoping I can make the process a little more seamless, and I'm hoping you guys can help.
Here's the setup:
G4 tower with two hard drives, the pre-installed one that has the OS and user accounts, and a second hard drive where I store all our media.
iMac right out of the box.
We have an Airport base station, and can log into each other's computer just fine (we each have an account on both computers). Printer is hooked up to the G4, and Rendezvous does its thing and it shows up magically on her print jobs.
Now I've got a couple of questions, and Mac help is very tight-lipped. The second hard drive in the G4 is the one I'd like both computers to use for media. I'd like to point both our iPhotos at it and both our iTunes at it. The iMac has a SuperDrive so iMovies I create on the G4 I'd like easily accessible to the iMac.
But I haven't been able to do it. I can give appropriate access to any user physically using the G4, but when I log from the iMac to the G4 I don't see the other drive. How can I make that happen?
And on a tangential question, isn't Rendezvous supposed to auto-discover all servers on the local network? We're on a local network, but we still have to use the "Connect to Server" method of accessing each other's computers. Shouldn't that automatically be available via the Network?
Thanks for your help. I decided a long time ago the rewards of getting the answers far outweigh the embarrassment at having to ask the questions.

I think you have to specify which drives/folders you wish to share. if you share the second HDD, it will show up for your other comp to use. when you connect, it will ask you which volumes you wish to mount. I'm not sure about the other stuff. I think iPhoto/iTunes like to have their stuff in your home directory, but there are ways to get around it, I believe. ALso, there's iCommune, a plug-in that Apple told the developer to abandon, that lets you share iTunes playlists across a network. I can put it on my site, if you like. Just don't let Apple catch you with it /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif http://homepage.mac....leSharing4.html I hope someone else can answer the rest.

Thanks, garymm.
I've continued to work with the setup, and you're right, once I set the permissions correctly then the iMac can mount the second hard drive.
BUT...
in order to do so I had to make the new user an admin on my computer. I think that's because the permissions are set on that volume (and all enclosed folders) thusly:
--Owner: (that's me): read and write
--Group: "Staff": read and write
--Others: no access
I'm one of those control freaks that likes to have everything locked down, unless I specifically grant access (security isn't just a matter of technology, it's a matter of habit). I tried other group settings, and only this one worked. I think "staff" is interpreted by Unix as "all users with admin access."
So here's the big question: how do I create a custom group? Using NetInfo Manager? (I saw no way to intuitively do so...let's just say that's a tool I don't like playing around with to learn) I'd want to create a group that contained just the users I want to access the second hard drive, whether or not they have admin permissions.

Oh, and you can point iTunes and iPhoto to libraries on other drives. I did so in iTunes in preferences; I did so in iPhoto using iPhoto Librarian. Now to teach myself the Applescript to automatically connect to the right volume on login, so that we won't ever have to command-K.
