In class today, my friend--a fellow iBook owner--showed me how he had obtained and installed the developer preview of OS 10.2. He has an iBook 500 CDR with 384 mb of RAM; I have the DVD version with 512 mb of RAM.

So, for 45 minutes, we switched laptops and I played around with 10.2.

It's is freaking slow. I would say it's slower than 10.1. iChat is slow; address book is slow; Sherlock doesn't even have that elaborate interface shown in the Apple picture.

The only nice thing I noticed was the added feature of spring-loaded folders. That was VERY nice. Otherwise, I don't see much that is new.

I hope there is going to be a more compelling reason to pay for this upgrade other than the spring-loaded folders.

So based on your playing around with a developer preview that your friend had obtained, who knows where, or how, or what version, we are supposed to take your word that the Jaquar build is unimpressive?

I don't think so.

Not to mention you're using it on a system that cannot even take advantge of the accelerated screen display from Quartz Extreme, which is one of the main points of this update. images/icons/rolleyes.gif

OK, so what systems will be able to fully take advantage of "Quartz Extreme"? Does it depend on the processor (G3 or G4) or the video card?

I have a Quicksilver 733, will it be ready for the Quartz Extreme? I don't know what type of a video card it came with, I think it's nvidia ... I am not sure.

Any input will be greatly appreciated images/icons/smile.gif

perhaps you should consider waiting until you figure this out before undertaking a major OS updgrade like 10.2 images/icons/grin.gif

ps......use the Apple System Profiler to find system/hdwr specs.....you DO know what that is, dont you ???

Geez doggdamac, lighten up, why don't you.

Macrohard, QE relies chiefly on the vid card. Head over to Apple's OS X site for the details, or look around this board since it's been discussed a great deal.

The bottomline is that your Mac needs a vid card with 32 megs to make "optimal" use of QE, and it needs to be an AGP card at that.

doggdamac is right that these details can be found by launching Apple System Profiler.

Peter,

Yes, this is pretty much what I am saying. I made an enquiry to my friend whether that 10.2 he had was modified in any way. It was not. It's a clean version that doesn't even have any applications installed on it.

I thought Apple released 10.2 to developers to wow them, so, logically, I should be wowed, too, right? After all, I am only a student developer.

I am not wowed. I like the spring-loaded folders and the printer sharing, but otherwise, I see nothing to stand in line for at the Apple Store when it's released.

I hope the final version will have more to offer.

Right now, just keeping the Finder open takes a good deal of resources in 10.1. This is because my Radeon isn't handling this. With QE in 10.2, my Radeon would be used fully to draw screens, render webpages, etc. In 10.1, it's being handled all by the processor. So, just having 10.2 and a capable video card will not only make web loading faster, but it will free CPU resources to speed the entire system, even aspects that aren't necessarily graphics intensive. iBooks are slow as crap anyway (in OS X).

Hi
They still have a couple of months of tweaking. This is if, what I think, they release it at MWNY. I'm not going to trust any developer copies because they are meant for developers to get a new feel and help compatibility. Plus, they are constantly updated. And of course the fact that Apple has the truly newest build.

Yossarian [USA]

I think you touched on it exactly. This is meant to wow developers, not end-users. The Developer preview is a way of illustrating the new technologies that have been implemented so Developer's can get a jump on implementing previously-unavailable features and optimizing existing routines.

Think of it as almost a proof of concept, technologically speaking, and do not confuse a developer preview aimed at introducing new APIs and core-technologies to programmers with a beta which is aimed at hammering out bugs from a user experience perspective.

Those with technical expertise have uniformly expressed high praise for what jaguar offers from a development perspective. That particular audience is not nearly as concerned with UI elements (i.e. drop shadows, spring-loaded folders) or speed issues as your typical end-user consumer would be -- which is why this wasn't intended to be released to non-developers at this stage.

A significant improvement in speed is very important particularly for individuals that have G3 machines. I expect better speed or I will not pay to upgrade to Jaguar. This makes me think I probably will try out Jaguar at a retailer store first before seriously thinking of upgrading.
