I am running Word 2001 on a PowerBook G3 with system 9.0.4. I have a problem opening a Word document by double clicking on its icon. If Word is not open, then double clicking works fine - the document opens. If Word is already open, then double clicking on an icon doesn't work. I can open the same document from inside Word with no problem.
Any suggestions on how to solve this problem?
Thanks,
Rich

I'm not sure about with OS9, but with OSX if you hold down the 'Ctrl' key and click on the file, you will pull up a menu. One of the items in the menu should be 'open with'. If you select that item you should be able to select MS Word. From then on you should be able to open the file normally.
Hope this helps.

I assume this is a new problem. and I assume everything else on the PB G3 is working correctly. Things to try, none of which is invasive:
1. Are the files Word 2001 files you created, or are they something Word 2001 translates? Have you made any changes to FILE EXCHANGE or SHARED APPLICATIONS or Office TRANSLATORS?
2. Rebuild the desktop. If you have something that deletes the desktop, better still. But COMMAND-OPTION keys held down on RESTART is safer.
3. If you are double-clicking on an alias' icon, delete it and creat a new one.
4. If neither of these work, from another start-up drive, do your disk maintenance and optimizing. I prefer Disk Warrior 2.1, followed by TechTools Pro 3.0.8.
4. If still no luck, you may have a confilct among start-up files. Or you may need to delete from SYSTEM FOLDER:PREFERENCES:MICROSOFT:Word Settings (9).
