I have a fairly large amount of pre-existing mp3 files that I would like to bring into iTunes, but even if I put the entire folder in the music folder it wont show up within iTunes. I tried the import function but although I could see the destination the import button stayed grayed out. Any suggestions? Thank you.

Did you try just dragging the files directly into iTunes?
I think you can drag them directly to the Library and it will add them.

That should work. For future reference, though, if they are already MP3s, you don't need to "import" them. Use the Add to Library option under the File menu instead.

Actually, if you already have your mp3's organized in separate folders, then you can drag the individual folders into the "Source" pane of the iTunes window and it will add the mp3's to your library and create an new play list with the name and contents of the folder.

There are a couple options that will help you out in the future too. In iTunes preferences go to Advanced, then turn on "Keep iTunes Music folder organized" and "Copy files into iTunes Music folder when adding to library". Now when you download a song you just double-click it and iTunes will copy that song into the iTunes Music folder for you. Since it copied the song, you can throw the one you double clicked on in the trash. Also, say you add a song that has no tag information other than the name. When you add information such as artist and album iTunes will move the file into the appropriate folder for you. No more worrying about getting a song from someone who has no idea how to use tags and having it mess up the organization of your library folders.
