I can't boot my iBook from the software restore CD. I goes through the whole boot process and locks up once the CD window opens, the mouse still works the menu is visable but the icons on the desktop disappear.
I'm new to Mac and don't know what else to try.

Depends what you're trying to do once booted... but.... You can boot off the CD with the extensions off. The only problem with doing that is that some things won't work off the CD. You can give it a try, though. Hold down the "C" key to boot off the CD until you see the little computer happy face. Immediately hold down the "Shift" key until you see the extensions off statement below the OS logo. If that doesn't work, let us know....

Have you installed anything hardware related in the iBook since you bought it? Like say, memory? If you did, try removing the upgrade and see if it will boot then.... The other thing you could try is an OS 9 retail CD (not machine specific) to see if that works.
Let us know how you make out...

How "new" are you? If you're brand new and your iBook is still under warranty, call up Apple and they'll fix you up in no time. Also, make sure you have nothing connected to you machine except the power adapter. Sometimes, USB devices can conflict with booting when there is a faulty OS (I learned that the hard way).

I tried another startup disc and the same problem. after the cd loads the computer locks up. If I stop it from loading, like hit the apple before the cd contents window opens all the menus work (File Special Help) but if I hit any it locks up or if I do nothing it goes back to loading and locks up.
I have had the iBook (Blue) over a year and bought it used from a friend. I didn't add any hardware memory etc.. I got a Lexar jumpshot cable about two weeks ago.

gojung, first thing first! When you use the Restore CD you wipe your Hard Drive clean of the already installed Mac OS and any third party apps from the HD and returns it to mint condition like from the factory. The Installed CD you use when the computer is having near corrupted OS data, about the last effort in trouble-shooting the problem in your Mac.
So now maybe you are wondering, after the Mac OS install, how in the heck do I get out from the install process!!!! There are several ways. A Restart of the Mac would put you right back on the Desktop. You can hold down the Power Button for a least six seconds and the Mac is manually restarted. The easier way to Restart the Mac after installing the OS is by selecting Restart option from the Menu Bar in the Finder(Desktop). Only means to return your Mac to normal use., or lastly(like ghastly) and waaaay to manually, shutdown and reboot.
I'm mention the fact because you are fairly new to the Mac. I hope it helps, good luck!
