I bought a couple songs through the iTunes store. I went to put them on my Rio 600 player and it wouldn't let me. I tried to covert the .m4p (isn't it supposed to be mp4?) to .mp3 but iTunes wouldn't allow that. I then tried to burn these new songs on a CD as a mp3 but it would allow that.
I realize these songs are protected, but I thought I would be able to listen to them on my mp3 player or burn them on CDs.
Am I doing something wrong? Thanks for you help.

You can burn them as regular audio cd's, you can play them on an ipod. You can also play music purchased throught apple's music store on up to three authorized computers. iTunes will not allow you to convert them directly to mp3.

just out of curiosity.....for hypothetical discussion..
If you took your songs purchased from applemusic.com ..
burned them on a cd using itunes 4...this puts them in a format that plays on regular audio cd players correct?
Then.. can't you take this cd, and import it on a old version of ITunes 3 or earlier to convert them to MP3's as was the case before the update?
Or is there more to it than that?
I've not "upgraded" to the new iTunes just for this reason as I don't want to mess with the new format just as of yet.
If I do upgrade it would only be on my spare mac, so that I could convert the songs to MP3 using the older version of itunes on my main mac?
Or am I sadly mistaken and clueless on this?

I believe that is true that you can go AAC to CD to MP3. But this is Apple adding just enough hassle to discourage piracy. It is a lot of steps, and by going from AAC to MP3, the re-compression between two lossy formats will degrade the quality.

NYCFarmboy -
You sound as though you think iTunes4 doesn't have the ability to rip tracks as mp3. That's not true. iTunes4 can rip as MP3, AIFF, WAV or AAC.
Update already!!! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I discovered that music I purchased on iTunes will have to be burned to a CD, them from the burned CD, I can convert to a MP3 and load my Rio. Mystery Stain is correct.
