My Conclusion: iChat Really Needs Dock Notification!

I've been using iChat for awhile and I have concluded that without Dock notification, this thing is really bad, if for that reason only.

All it does is give out this tiny little blip, and that's it. Not even a bouncing icon...NOTHING! So when you're listening to music or something, you cannot hear it!

So, I am happily surfing the web, when I casually switch over to iChat. What do I see?? "HELLLOOOO!!!!" "ARE YOU THERE!!!" "WHY WON'T YOU RESPOND!!!"....times 20.

I just give up. I'm going back to AIM or Proteus. Hopefully Apple will put in some type of notification by the GM release....

And that's my rant for the day.

Be a developer. Any other way is illegal. 'Nuf said.

As for iChat, unless it has Dock notification like Adium, I'm not going to switch to it. I need Dock notification. I really don't know how I lived without it.

d00d said it, I think Adium and its extensive use of the dock has become something I could never leave... I would feel so primitive without it...

I find that iChat is a great application with a great user interface. I use it as my only AIM client, and rarely ever go onto AOL anymore to chat. The file transfer utility is great, and the names in the buddy list instead of screen names are sweet too. When 10.2 comes out it will rock!

Well uh there is a way you can clearly fix the problem...email Apple....give em a link to this page...show me why people want dock notification. I mean they did hand out a preview release for a reason right? no they can test it also so why dont you go sif through apple websight and email em. tell em the importance of this. i dont want and slip ups becuase those damned windows users will pursicute us if we do not strive for the best.....

i don't have ichat, and never used it, but i wholeheartedly agree about dock notification. back when i used os 9 there'd be times when i'd get so wrapped up in other things, that i'd forget i was on AIM.. because there was nothing jumping/flashing in front of my face to warn me of incoming IMs. people thought i was ignoring them. images/icons/tongue.gif

i'm really loving the bouncing icon in the AIM client, as it keeps me on my feet. the only problem is that it's very resource hogging. i'm basically paralized from doing anything productive, especially in classic, until i've acknoledge AIM.

there needs to be a way to notify incoming IMs through the dock in a non-memory sucking way. or even better, a way to organise IM windows so that you will be notified individually of which window the IM is coming from, and go directly to it, without having to minimise them every time.

that ability is probably the one sole thing i prefer about the windows world...

I completely agree iChat needs dock notification. But it is obviously very unfinished! I would put bet this feature just isn't finished yet. They will probably include a new sound set as well because the current use of system alert sounds is really not working for me.
