You're a little late in the game on this one (unless you're with OS9 for the long haul), but CC was essential to keeping my extensions in order, as well as creating certain special booting scenarios. It was THE app that improved on Apple's Extensions Manager with advanced features,
It is definitely only useful in OS9, although when I was still booting into OS9 and had OSX on my system, I created two different extensions sets that would load automatically, depending on whether I was in OS9 or classic.
That reviewer was undoubtedly an idiot.

I guess it depends on what OS you're using. I bought my iMac a little over 3 years ago, it came with 9.0. After all the great reviews, I bought CC and installed it. Things worked fine for a while. Then, for no discernible reason, I started to experience crashes and freezes. By manually checking things out, I found that it was CC that causing the conflict. I contacted C&G and when they finally responded they said that there were certain 'issues' with CC 8 and my OS 9.0. Nothing was resolved, so I left CC disabled. I've had no problems since then.
I'm a fairly light user, using the computer for some word processing, digital photos, surfing the net and e-mailing. I don't download much of anything. I've been tempted to update to 9.2.1, I have the disk, but, things have been working so well that I don't feel the need to risk screwing things up.
I guess that I can't say my experience is disappointing, since not having CC hasn't been a problem. I think the luster is off C&G for the lack of handling this problem despite their otherwise good reviews. My suggestion, if you're in the same boat as I was, is don't fix it if it 'ain't' broke.

CC was an indispensible application with OS 7.x With the advent of Extension Manager, the need for CC began to diminish. Granted, it would automate the process of checking for extension conflicts, but if the user was technically literate enough to follow CC instructions, then they can usually do as well with Extension Manager.

Have used CC for years - a "must have" for me and countless others.
Extensions management much superior to Apple's. Much better
Desktop Rebuilding than the standard. Facilitates a Clean Install
by allowing you to merge old with new with ease.
High class paper manual written by David Pogue!
I have four Macs all operating in pre-X OSs. No need or desire to
go to OS X at this time.

I remember Conflict Catcher as an application that required a great deal of caution. You must get the version that works with your OS version and understand what you are doing. Read the directions and ask questions if you don't quite get it. This can seriously mess your system up, otherwise.

The final version of Conflict Catcher is 9.0.1. Used in OS 9.0.4/9.1/9.2.2 it works flawlessly and usefully. What the utility offers is not needed in OS X, so there is none.
Now for the not-so-good news. Casady & Greene, the distributors, are going out of business according to <Macintouch.com>. Creators of the program will probably retain its rights, though.

as of today, Cassedy & Greene are out of business. CC was a wonderful application and still is for those using OS's prior to OS X.

And by-the-way - there are 25 to 30 million of us in pre-X OSs
compared to the 5 to 7 million who have X (but may not all be
using it.)
