formating HD

i have a 10gb usb portable HD, is it possible to format it with one partition - 50% format for mac and another 50% format PC? the HD will connect with powermac 9500/OS8.6.

If you format this on the PC it should also be available to the Mac, especially under OS X. But even under 7.5, IBM formatted Jaz drives were usable by the Mac, if PC Exchange was installed.
