I'm a new Mac user, and coming from a Windows background, I'm used to seeing a small icon in the system tray which indicated that Norton AntiVirus was running. Is there any way to verify that it is working in OS X?

Go to Applications/Utilities and open Process Viewer. This will show you the status of all running processes.

You could also open the Terminal application and type top. It will also show running processes.

Drop an EICAR test file on your desktop and see if you get a warning or not! If you get no response from NAV then it is either not running, or your auto-protect is not working properly, in which case it doesn't really matter whether it is running or not.

jerseyfreeze - process viewer will clearly indicate this for you.

While you probably know this, be sure you are
running Norton AV 8.0.1 - the first version of AV
for OSX did not provide AutoProtection (just manual
scanning). I have no idea whether this is a free
upgrade to full AV function in OSX, so you may need
to visit Symantec's web site (I get it for free as
UVa lisences it for everyone, home or work use, and
really encourages us to keep current, especially
as I work of the ITC department - must set a
sound example and all).

Cheers, Michael
