Hi Peter,
I'm trying, I'm trying /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif However, this is the first non-defective, out of 3, ibooks that I've received, thus this is really the first one to count.
I had read many a post from 15" FP iMac users who said text was fuzzy. With the 12" ibook I could only call the display "crisp". Now the 14" is showing me what they were talking about......
If I swap, I'll probably do the ibook given I've already opened the box, and installed, a 512MB stick.
Do you find the "zoom" feature to work well on the 12" display for viewing areas with tiny text, ie on some websites?

John,
Before returning, try this first. In Internet Explorer, first open the browser. Then on the toolbar on the top of the page, click on View-Customize Toolbar. You will get a drop down menu. Drag the smaller text/larger text icons into the Internet Explorer toolbar. You can customize any toolbar with any browser to be able to enlarge or make smaller, the text. If this makes you happy and you are able to read the text because its larger, then you can keep your iBook.

Peter,
The text on the 14" model, the one with me now, is plenty big enough, just fuzzy no matter what. The whole desktop is like a slightly out of focus photograph. Not bad enough that one couldn't live with it, but bothersome, especially once you've tasted the utterly in focus quality of the 12" display. I believe this is because they both have the same resolution, yet the smaller pixels of the 12" yield greater clarity.
It's the 12" model I was asking the zoom question about. When the 12" was here, I didn't have a chance to go online, thus I don't know if it's going to be really small for reading websites. Though your tip gives me more confidence that I'll be able to monkey with the 12" 's settings to make it all cool.
I'll think the return over for a day or so, Amazon gives me 30 days.....
Thanks!

Maui, you may just be a CRT kind of guy.
As for repartitioning, reinstalling, etc, there is no better time to jump in and try it then when your computer is brand new, you have no data to lose, and you have a full warranty to wear out! Jump in!

CrecenS,
Oh, I'm still searching for my identity /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
I saw the eMac display and thought it was really unclear. The 12" ibook was extremely crisp during the days that it was here. The more I look at the 14", the fuzzier it seems. Why pay $200 more for an inferior display? Guess I'm more of a hi-res guy than anything else. The 12" gives the appearance of a higher resolution display even though the actual real estate is smaller.
I'll read up on the reinstall stuff and dive in head first, if not with the 14", then the 12" to follow.

Since the pixels on the 14" are bigger than the 12", you may just need to adjust to the "biggerness" of them, especially since you've been scrutinizing your 12"'ers for so long. But if you don't get used to the 14" "fuzziness", you could try another 12". What did you want to do with this computer again?
ps- your retailer must love you.

Fortunately Amazon is just a big old giant corporation and I'm a mere small blip on their radar. But given this is the first non-defective unit they've sent, I have some mileage before they start to grumble.......

John,
Did you open System Preferences - General, and change Font Smoothing Style to Medium-Best for Flat Panel? Default setting is for CRT. You can also turn off font smoothing there for different size (8-12) fonts. Give those a try too.

Hi Peter,
Yeah, I've done both font smoothing adjustments. Your tip about putting the font size adjustment icons in the IE toolbar has been extremely helpful for reading websites. Before, the text was "thin". Large enough, but thin in the since that it appears like only one line of pixels make up the character. By increasing the font size with the icons, the fonts became more full and much easier to read.
I'm thinking about hanging on to the 14" unit. Order a 12" ibook from amazon with the free shipping (UPS 2nd day). Then do a side by side comparison here at home to see which is best for me, return the one that's not. That will only cost $33, just like it would if I returned the 14" first. Amazon gives a 30 day window, why not take advantage of it.
It's possible I have the old grass is greener syndrome. The 12" may be a little more sharp, but perhaps there are some practical limitations when compared to the 14" that aren't fresh in my brain.
We'll see. Thanks for the help.
Btw, I registered with Apple and received 12 free issues to Mac World. Over a year on the Mac World Forums and I've yet to actually lay eyes on a genuine Mac World magazine.....now's the chance /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
