iTunes freezes when updating iPod

Since updating to iTunes 4 (and 4.0.1) and iPod 1.3, my G3 mac freezes when updating music on my iPod. It doesn't happen every time, but more often than not. The spinning beachball of death never stops, and eventually brings down the entire system. Force Quit from the dock or apple menu does not exit iTunes and I am forced to use the command-control-power combination to restart the machine. So far that doesn't seem to have affected the iPod, but I can't believe it's too good for it. Any suggestions (other than buying a newer mac)?

I guess I'll just give up on iTunes 4. I've gone back to iTunes 2 and OS 9 to update my iPod. At least that was stable.
