I found this URL, downloaded the program and ran it and WOW! For $12, it's a steal and should be licensed by Apple for all their OS X products. Unbelievable as it might sound, it really speeds things up.

Can you explain the difference between this and Cocktail? They appear to do about the same thing, and Cocktail is "donationware," at $5.

There are lots of these out there. Most of them are the same idea: they provide a GUI to traditional Unix maintenance scripts. Cocktail, MacJanitor, Jaguar Cache Cleaner, Cache Out X, various utilities with variations on the name "optimizer"...they're not all identical, but they do similar things. Use whatever one does what you want at the price you like.

And what exactly does such software do when it says it is "Optimizing/Modifying Files"?
