Modem Not Found-but it's there!

I have a G3 B&W with an Encore/G4 ZIF processor upgrade with OS 10.2 loaded. Everything runs fine except the modem. I tried installing the Apple Modem Updater 2.0 and I receive a message: "Modem Not Found". I don't know exactly when this problem occurred, but I would like to be able to send and receive faxes on this machine. I've checked the connections and they look fine. Anyone have any suggestions?
