What is a good resolution for .jpg files to be used in pdf files so that the photos look good when printed, but are not too large for transmission over the internet?

Jpegs are not the proper format for printing. They will work but tiffs or eps are better quaility. The res is 2x the output line screen/size change. And please if your sending to a printshop no rgb convert to cmyk first.

These would be used for sending short catalogs of products to clients by email, both for on screen viewing and then printing to their printers. Would the same rules as stated above apply to this usage? What files type and resolution is good for both printing to printers and also respecting transmission times?

As a general rule of thumb I've found for veiwing and inkjet printing that 150dpi is fine. Set Distiller to 96 dpi and they will print OK and the file size will not be to big to e-mail.
