I have a Power PC 9500 model 200mhz with a 2.0 gig SCSI hard drive. I just recently bought a 18 gig SCSI hard drive. I can't figuire how to terminate this hard drive, I do not want use my current 2.0 gig hard drive. When I install the hard drive and try to boot from my Mac OS 8.5 disk. All I get is a gray screen with my mouse pointer. If I try not to boot with the OS 8.5 cd-rom, I get a floppy disk symbol with a ? mark in the middle. What does this mean? Please would someone help me... Thank you in advance.

you terminate the drive with extreme prejudice /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
Sorry could resist.
Actually its a jumper on the drive itself. Did you get documentation with the hard drive, it should have shown you the jumper settings required.
Its been a while since I worked on a scsi but in the past I needed to format (low-level) the drive using a diskette suppled by the mfg. This may not be the case now so again read your docs, if you don't have them they should be online somewhere.
The floppy disk with the question mark means no system files where fonud on the hard drive, which makes sense if you didn't boot up with the OS8.5 boot cd.
I'm not sure why you just get a blank screen when you do boot up with the cd though perhaps its related to the jumper issue.
I hope that helps.

Aren't you supposed to say, "!Hasta la vista, Baby!", before you terminate a drive?

Actually it's not a "Jumper" (sorry bud) some drives DO have a jumper but the termination (active or passive depends on your needs and the drive) is onboard that particular drive. A lot of drives need an active or passive terminator. The rule of thumb is you have one on the beginning and the end of your drive chain. For instance your card should be self terminating (if it's not you should upgrade /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/tongue.gif) so you have termination at the card, now say you have 3 drives, you put all three drives on the scsi cable and the last drive on the OTHER end of the cable (away from the scsi card) has to have a terminator on it. It's like a passthrough device that you plug the cable into and then you plug the terminator (now attached to the cable) on to the drive.
Hope that helped.
