No, they aren't Mac viruses, and you don't "have" a virus /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
These are Windows viruses that are normally distributed as attachments via email. In fact, that's how you got them: some of your Windows-using friends are infected and sent them to you as attachments.
If you were running Windows and opened any of those files, then you'd be infected and the virus would do its thing. Since you're on a Mac, they not only won't do anything, they can't do anything, no matter how hard you try to get them to work /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif They're just useless files sitting on your hard drive.
Norton is reporting them as viruses because technically they are, and because Norton's virus database includes Windows viruses. However, they can't/won't do any damage to your Mac.

my friend brian sends me pc files, .exe.... short programs, sometimes. but sometimes I get this stuff sent from people I dont know via spam.
so, I have no way of knowing who the culprit was.
I did ask my friend if he has virus protection and keeps it up to date, and he says yes.

Nobody seems to have brought this up yet: Macs are immune to that virus but they can "vector" it.
Although those PC viruses are harmless to a Mac that isn't using VPC, they can be sent to other people. If those other people are PC-ers, they will be infected. (If they open it.)
The only true Mac virus that I have seen PERSONALLY is the "666" virus. (AKA: "Sevendust".) That one can't infect OS X. Only OS 9/Classic. I know there are others but I have never seen them in peson. I don't even know if there are any viruses for OS X but I'm sure it's only a matter of time untill some horse's ass decides to whip one up.
That having been said... It seems to me that the main goal of antivirus programs for Macs is to prevent them from vectoring PC viruses. This, I say, is what your antivirus program just did.
Your PC-sucking friends should thank you for the favor. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

I wouldn't say you are "Safe", really.
Yes, there are no (known) OS X viruses... YET. It's almost a sure thing that there WILL be one, eventually. It's just a matter of time until some #$%@&$ comes up with one. Having virus protection in place before you need it is a good idea.
There are also things known as "macro viruses". Microsoft Word/Works has the capability to use macros that can do things similar to the way AppleScript works. (Only AppleScript is better.) They can take control of the program and make it do things against your will. A similar thing can happen to M$ Outlook. If you use these programs on the Mac, somebody can send you a macro and make the program do things against your will.
There are a few more things that people can do to your computer from afar. I don't want to give any ideas to the idiots out there, so I won't elaborate. Second, I don't know a whole lot of them but I know they are there.
I guess, the moral of the story is that it's OK to feel good about having a Mac because they don't get viruses as easily but don't think you are 100% safe just because of it. The very LEAST you need to do is to keep your guard up in case something happens.

nothing is 100% guaranteed in this world, thats for sure. My understanding is that people with always on internet connections, like dsl and cable, are at a higher risk than that of the occasional dial up user.
I believe that david pogue said recently in one of his mac osX books that "attempts to hack him happen dozens of times per week".... I found that to be interesting.
Ive been pretty lucky in 13 yrs on the net and using a mac. But time shows, eventually it can happen to anyone. Sooner or later.
anyone wanting more info on the subject should go to:
