Safari keeps quiting on me

Safari keeps unexpectedly closing on me whenever I visit specific sites like www.scmp.com (a hong kong newspaper), www.theonion.com, etc. The thing is it never used to do this up until about two weeks ago. It didn't bother me too much until it also started added one of my work-info sites to this list, which I use multiple times daily.
I check these sites on IE with no problem, and on other macs running safari with no problem. How can I fix this annoying bug?

Not a reply, but an addition. I visit a site (new messageboard) that crashes Safari often, mostly as I move from topic to topic. The site is, well...very MS centric and the webmaster isn't able to figure what the problem is. I've sent crashlogs that begin:
OS Version: 10.2.6 (Build 6L60)
Command: Safari
PID: 414
Exception: EXC_BREAKPOINT (0x0006)
Code[0]: 0x00000001Code[1]: 0x97e5497c
Would anyone know from this "statement" (or any/all of the log) why this is happening? Is this something to send as a bug report? or the fault of the site?
thanks

my safari is doing the same thing, starting about a week ago. certain sites and especially downloads (cnet.com for instance) make it go POOF. ALSO , my internet explorer will no longer launch. I managed to download the latest version (5.2.3), but still no luck. the 2 bugs started happening about the same time & I feel they must be related somehow. help anyone?
thanks,
w.

Hi! I have similar problems. All of a sudden (about a week ago) Safari started crashing on me. The program is completely unreliable and so I have switched back to using IE. The thing I miss most is the popup blocking. Other than that, IE works, Safari doesn't.

So does Camino, a Mozilla project (block popups). But I'm wondering if any of you regularly maintain your Macs? Simple things like clearing your caches, repairing permissions, running fsck -y on startup once in a while? Is your Mac turned on in the wee hours of the morning so that the built-in cron scripts can run as scheduled? I use Safari now by default, and haven't had any problems at all with it.
If any of you answer "no" to my questions, here's a simple way to do most of it. Get Cocktail and run everything in the "Pilot" tab. You should restart after doing this. See if that doesn't help.

Thanks for the tip. I really like the Cocktail. Even after doing the tune up I still have the same problem of a crashing Safari. I think a complete fresh install of Safari is called for. However, how does one remove all files associated with the program. Is there an uninstall option?

Ok maintaining your mac is important but there is a known conflict between the keychain prefs and safari when keychain becomes corrupt, you need KEYCHAIN FIRST AID:

this might help, its worth a try

Hi Everyone,
Thanks for all your wonderful adivice. Non of it helped, but I was determined, and got some wonderful new utilities.
I discovered that turning off Java altogether in the Safari preferences stopped the crashing when I visited http://www.cnn.com.
I have noticed before that pages with Java would crawl to the finish. Meaning it would take a long time for the Java applets to show. For example: http://www.innerfami....com/index1.htm
Now I need to figure out why Java causes my Safari browser to crash. Any idea?
Cheers,
-SRP

I suggest you check your hardware, specifically RAM, confirming you don't have a defective chip (TechTool Pro is great for this - make sure you run all of the RAM test). Java can be memory intensive.
Safari has run smoothly for me since I started using it 2 months ago. I'm using Roadrunner Broadband. All sites listed in this thread loaded quickly without error.

Good idea suggesting TechTool Pro to test the RAM, but I wonder what's up with Micromat? TTP 4 was supposed to ship in April, then June, then late July OR August. Now their site is saying "Late Summer." I emailed them two weeks ago about it, but have gotten no reply. I've been a huge advocate of TTP over the years, and it's embarrassing.

The party line is Micromat is continuing to "refine/test TTP4, wanting to have the best product on the market". The rumor mill says they are having difficulty with some of the testing and it may be more like Autumn before the debut. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif I too am very much looking fwd to the end product.
Micromat posted this on MacFixit - "What is going on is software development and testing, by the same people who did Drive 10. Any problems that are encountered during this process are confidential, and are covered by a strict non-disclosure agreement signed by all people involved in testing the product.
Having said that, I feel free to tell you that essentially, things are just taking longer than we expected. There is nothing in particular that is problemmatic. It is an entirely new program, our first Cocoa application. I think you will be pleased with the results."
I just received Disk Warrior 3 and it works quickly, performing a great job with directory management/optimization. My hope is TTP 4 will operate at a similar level of quality.
