I didn't buy my Mac to play games, but, I had a copy of Warcraft 3 for my PC and saw that it was a multi CD, so, I thought I would try it out.
Under OS X, the game play is kinda choppy, and everything has to be set to low detail.... yet, with OS 9.2.2 the game is really smooth, and allows me to run most prefs in medium detail.
Why the difference? It doesn't run as a classic application in OS X. Is OS X's OpenGL not as refined or something?

Hard to say. OSX does require more overhead to run well. It might be just a RAM thing. How fast is your computer and how much memory do you have?

Could also possibly be that you do not have the latest patches, check out versiontracker.com and see if there is anything for WarCraft.

Are you doing this on your B&W G3?

In general, games run better in OS 9, especially on lower end systems. On my powerbook g3, age of empires 2 runs nice and smooth in os 9, but in os x, it's basically unplayable.
With higher end machines, however, the gaps in performance between os x and os 9 become slimmer to the point where the difference is negligable. There are lots of reasons for this;
-OS 9 has more mature gfx drivers
-OS 9 needs less systems resources
-OS 9 hogs the cpu, better for games on systems that need the extra juice.

I'll agree though games in OS 9 take OS X games to school. I have a G4 867 with 1.2 gigs of ram and Geforce 4Ti upgraded graphics card. Games suck in 10 STILL and many games are 10 only now so i gave up on the mac and bought a PS2.
I too bought warcraft 3 and made many calls to apple care regarding this performance issue because according to them and the specs this should run like a racehorse on my system yet it doesnt. The Demo to Ghost Recon is completely unplayable on my system.

thats dunny that you say that, "games run better in os 9". Medal of honor demo would not run at all in os 9. When i got os x i said "what the heck i'll d/l it agian". it worked ;like a charm in os x (everything set to low quality) at that time my computer had a rage 128 graphics card. One thing i've seen that helps game performance it to shut down everything. AndI mean everything, even the finder. I learned how to do that through this issue of macworld. Apple should come out with something that would make games run better.

You probably didn't have your open gl and gfx drivers updated.

Hey Veggie, this may seem like a dumb question, but where does one get updated gfx and open gl drivers for the Mac?
Do I have to worry about this with just OS 9, OS X or both?

I encounter this because my Rev. B. iMac has a GameWizard Voodoo2 card. Games do pretty well in OS 9, but there are no Voodoo drivers for X (nor will there likely ever be -- sigh.)
Can't wait until I can afford a new Mac...

Only OS 9, check ati's website for the graphics drivers (they are for retail cards but work on the bto one's as well).
As for open gl, if you have os 9.2 or later, you already have the updated open gl.
BTW, not a stupid question, and I went ahead and got a link. Gmiller, you have a rage 128 right? If so, give this a try, if not, I'll link you to the appropriate ones if you have toruble finding them yourself. You may or may not already have this installed (it's fairly old) but it won't hurt to install it just in case.

I meant better drivers or something along those lines.
