Which of the font files in the System:Library folder are not needed by OS X? There's a few that I will never use and there's no need to have to scroll through them in various applications' font lists.

I booted into OS 9 and already deleted some...but then chickened out and put them back.

It's hard to believe the Apple party line that all of these fonts are necessary.

Thanks.

Don't delete ANYTHING in the System Folder. Even if you don't use them, they don't take up much space or memory. And certain apps require these fonts.

I was wondering the same thing. In a production environment, (at least in ours), where we design in, we clear our our fonts folder of all the fonts except the city fonts and charcoal. This is OS 9 thought. We do this so when we work a job up we know what fonts we have to send along with the job. If there is a font in the system folder that we use in the job, quark will use the system folder font and we may neglect to include it in our fonts folder sent to the printer. We have had problems with OS 9.2.2 regarding fonts and suitcase. We had to clear the machine and put on OS 9.1.

Is anyone running OS X in a production environment now?

I am compelled to point out that Macworld magazine, the host of these fine boards, has an article about this very topic of fonts in their newest issue. Worth a read.

Yeah! anyway, what's the deal! I work in a production environment and I don't see OSX as a stable environment when it comes to production. This whole OSX font thing has me wigged out! Who was the wacko that came up with this organization system! I like to clear out the system fonts folder in OS9 and just keep the basics also. I use Suitcase to manage all my fonts, I get rid of any font in the system folder that might conflict with Suitcase, like Arial, Courier and Dingbats despite what they say about the OS needing them, Suitcase keeps these so called system fonts in check-no probs.
Now, I'm at a loss in OSX because you can't clean out the (many) system font folders--I'm not messing with that yet!! In the meantime, I get a message saying that Times causes a crash, well, I need the Adobe version of Times dammit! What gives? I have the entire Adobe Font library (Folio) installed and I want to use THOSE fonts. "overiding the system fonts" in Suitcase doesn't hold up to its claim of a fix for this problem.

Sorry so long, but anyone have any more insight on this?

OSX has a bit longer of a way to go till I'm totally X. I have all the latest programs, save Quark and all the fonts I need, yet I can't manage my fonts the way I want to and I can't print to my Epson untill they release the driver for it!!! Now what good will that do me? hmmm images/icons/confused.gif
