I just upgraded to X on my 233 MHz Strawberry iMac and now certain letters/characters arent where they are supposed to be on the keyboard. I use the option key to access some characters where the shift key used to be. Is this normal?
Also, I have downloaded a file to my desktop and I can`t delete it or even move it to a different folder. The following message appears when I try to do anything to it The item is being used by another task right now. Other tasks include moving, copying or emptying the trash. Try again when the other task is complete. I have tried quitting the finder and restarting but nothing seems to work.

Hmm. The only thing I can think of for the keyboard problem is that you have a keyboard layout that is different from U.S. Go to System Preferences -> International preference pane -> Input Menu tab. Make sure that the U.S. layout is selected.

That's the fix!!! It works fine now. Anyone care to tackle the "stubborn file" part of my post?

Read the FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions). The link is in one of the posts at the top of this forum.

I was hoping to avoid Terminal. From everything I've read I should fear it!! Actually, I gave it a shot and it worked. Thanks for steering me towards the FAQ: next time I'll check that out first! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif

No need to fear the Terminal, just learn it as best you can and be careful with what you type.
The link in the line above will help you get started.

Yeah, to reiterate, the Terminal isn't to be feared as long as you understand what you're typing. Man pages go a long way to help (type "man <command>" to find out how to use <command> and what it does).

I concur wholeheartedly. The beauty of OS X is that you can do anything and never have to touch the command line--hell, my wife doesn't even know Terminal exists--but it's there if you want to explore, and sometimes it really is the quickest way to solve a problem.

Yeah, and it is difficult to do really irreparable harm to your computer unsing the terminal without using sudo, so don't use sudo unless you absolutely know what you are doing and you should be fine with it.
And as I also hail from California, Sir Lawrence, I hope you agree with me when I talk about how stupid this governor recall deal is. It makes me sick to my stomach.
Alright, I'm done.

Good point about the use of sudo. I always caution people to be careful with the sudo command, but too many people misunderstand and think that Terminal itself is inherently dangerous. Ain't so.
As for the other thing, I don't want to get too off-topic, but let's just say that if we met in the real world, I have a feeling we'd get along just fine.
