I dont think that you can, since the iPod syncs with iTunes, unless you never want to add any new songs. I know that you can make your own playlists right on the new iPods but when you sync it with iTunes, you loose them, they don not sync back to iTunes. At least this is what I have read.
Good luck

If you turn of auto-syncing your iPod nolonger transfers all the music in your iTunes library and you can check which playlists you want on your iPod.

paulzoom ... select your iPod in iTunes. Remember that deleting a playlist does not delete the songs. The songs will still be in your iPod taking up space. After selecting your iPod in iTunes, look in the browser on the left. Those are all the cd`s on the iPod. highlight and delete any albums you don`t want then go back to the playlist side and delete the playlist. The playlist and the songs are now deleted. If you only want to delete the playlist but not the songs, just select your iPod in iTunes, expand the iPod by clicking on the little arrow next to it and delete the playlist.
Again, with the iPod selected, look in the lower right hand corner of iTunes. Click on iPod preferences. Select manually manage songs and playlists. This way you can drag and playlist you want to your iPod. They won`t be transfered over automatically.

Will the method you explain allow me to delete the songs and playlists from the Ipo dwithout deleting them from Itunes? I want to keep my Itunes playlists and songs and just take them off the Ipod.

Then do what Jens suggests. Go to the icon in iTunes on the bottom right, go the button farthest to the left down there and choose it. Then, a window will pop up, and you can toggle which playlists you want to sync to the iPod.
