I am installing a WD HD 160 hard drive into my G4 400. I currently have a 10 gig HD as the master and installed the WD as the slave. The mac is not seeing the WD. What can I do?

Hi
I know this may be an obvious question but...I'll ask it anyway. Did you use Drive Setup (Mac OS 9 or earlier) or Disk Utility (Mac OS X) to format it after you installed it? All new drives need to be formatted before they can be used and before they show up on the Desktop or anywhere else in the OS, well except in a disk utility app.

Maybe in the end you'll need to get a PCI card. Get one rated at the same ATA as the hard drive preferably (ATA/100 for an ATA100 hard drive).
I don't know that there aren't more options to try before dropping $60-$150...but it's the only other thing I can think of.

From all my research and experience putting a 160GB HD in a G4 400 is a no can do.
First to go above 128GB you need a 42 bit ATA controller, not just any old ATA 133 or 100. At 32 bits the controller can only access 128GB.
The killer for us is the Boot ROM. I tried and failed to put a 200GB in my 2002 Quicksilver. After much hair pulling and looking for answers found that only the MDD and Xserve support drives larger than 128GB. Apple KB article is here:

I've posted this info on a couple of posts about the new drives larger than 128GB and asked each time if anyone has a work around. I am running 4 drives, 2 60GB and 2 80GB and would swap the 80's out for 250's if there is a work around. No luck so far in getting a work around.
