I'm pondering getting an Airport card for my iBook because they have a wireless network at the school I'll be attending in the fall. So here's my question the wireless network is not an Airport network, will I still be able to connect to it with an Airport card? is it at all possible.

Airport is simply Apple's name for the industry 802.11 standard. If your school transmits 802.11, you're in. Same reason Mac or Windows can hook up to wireless internet in any city without knowing what kind of transmitter is behind the wall. It's a standard.

Pssst, stain, that has to be either 802.11b or 802.11g. 802.11a is incompatible with b and g. However, almost no one uses a that I know of.

You're right, of course, I just thought it unlikely that an IT dept would spec 802.11a for a public network with so many clients that change every year (students) who might already be set up for wireless with the Rest of the World.

Absolutely, but then again, many IT departments think that Windows is always the way to go for everything. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
My school has been putting in 802.11b hotspots at my campus. They were a little late to the part though, because as they started adding them, 802.11g came out.
