does the dock act like the taskbar too?

Yes.
And more.
"Just click on it. It's not like you'll get a blue screen of death or anything."

i hope that cool new panther feature will put an end to the need for those 3rd party apps.

There have always been customizations for Macs.
There will always be customizations for Macs.
People love to make customizations for Macs.
And teachers' college classes using a Mac lab after art classes will be embarrassed by the impromptu customizations left behind.
It is the nature of the universe.
"Stop worrying and start playing. You're in Mac land now."

Oh yes. They had fun with system alerts...
a guy with a big voice:
"HAW ha! YOU MADE A MISTAKE!"
and from a girl
"TEE HEE hee hee, STOP that!"
even simple stuff could be disconcerting
like a sharp
"WELL?"
or an attention getting
"HeLLO-o?!"
Art students also liked replacing icons in the launcher. What app will you get?
"The problem is, it's just so ridiculously simple, you can't catch them at it."

Hmm, I switch between applications all the time. This is called Apple Key + tab.
You should try it sometime.

Thanks for the information about WindowShade X. I guess there is no way to get OS X to allow the user to do this.
Best regards,

Excuse me???
You click on the open application's rectangle on the Windows Taskbar and switch to that application or you click on an open (or even not open) application's icon on the Mac OSX Dock and switch to it. It seems the same to me.
If that is too hard, you alt-tab to switch between open windows in Windows, or you command (Apple)-tab to switch from open application to open application and the dock, (even if it was hidden) shows you which one you are about to select. This too does what you were asking about.
What part of this concept can't you grasp? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
