i have a 400mhz imac g3 with 93 GB HD and 320 mb ram. recently my computer has been running really really sluggishly and slow. all the time. and not just during big programs but like if i am using safari and opening a window or another program at the same time. or if i am using itunes and doing something else. i didn't go this slow before. what's wrong is there something i can do to speed things up?

Do you allow your Mac to run the cron scripts at all (do a search for information on those)?
How much room is there on your hard drive?
edit: Almaink, just squeezed in ahead of me with the link I would have posted were my head in full working order.

Crons is only part of the regular maintenance you should be doing - the others are clearing the cache, pre-binding when adding new SW that doesn't do optimisation at the end of the install, and Repairing Permissions.
These and the crons should be done religiously and should prevent the likes of what you've experienced in your post.
