I have a growing collection of .pdf files and would like to be able to organize them into a library in which I can easily scan the contents of each file. --The .pdf file title is insufficient for this purpose. Each .pdf file is a journal article. So, I would like to have some way to record information about each article (title, author, journal title, year of publication) and view the info when I open a folder containing the .pdf files. --Something similar to the way iTunes stores information for each mp3 woud work beautifully. Any suggestions? A file utility maybe?

I don't know of any utilities that do that. However, I remember reading a post a while back in which a member asked if there were any ideas for apps or utilities that he could produce. This would be a prize contender for that. I'll have a hunt and see if I can find the thread.
On another note, Panther's new Finder is based on the iTunes layout. That may have the ability you're looking for (might not though). shrug.

You might look at iView Media (www.iview-multimedia.com). It's a $30 media cataloging application that handles a variety of media types -- including PDF. It will provide such information as date of creation and modification and can show you a preview of the file (as well as the path to the original).

Thanks. These are great suggestions. I'm checking them out right now.
One potential candidate I found at PDF zone is "pdf search":
http://dieselpoint.com/pdf-search.htm . --Freeware for indexing up to 100 pdfs.
