Just got an email from ClubMac. They're featuring a new line of CD-RWs, DVD recorders, hard drives from Lacie that were designed by Porsche Design GmbH in Austria. Sleek lookin' too. BTW, does 52x relate to 0-60 in 5 seconds?

Haha, sweet. Porsche's are officially measured in 0-100 km, or 0-62 mph, btw /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif

There at MacZone too
Here LaCie's page with the shiny drives http://www.lacie.com...ge.htm?id=10032
They seem LIKE they match the G5

I noticed at the ClubMac site yesterday that they're priced lower than corresponding standard Lacie issue stuff. Wonder what's up with that? Promotion? Or not up to normal Lacie standards? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/shocked.gif I have an elderly 8x4x32x drive that I would like to replace, so am thinking of getting the 52x Porsche.
Jason ... I stand corrected LOL.

$99? I can't believe how freakin' cheap that is! But personally, I think it's a little ugly.

Grant, I have the 48x version of the D2, and I can't say enough good things about it. it looks great, too. I can't believe it's only $129 now. I payed $179 10 months ago for mine.

Damn, I wonder how much they paid for that incredible brick design. The lines are visually stunning and obviously penned from a true master designer. The splendid use of colors is also mesmerizing ! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif

Kinda underwhelming, no? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I've seen people post about how great all the Porsche designed PC stuff is, but I've yet to see something of theirs that didn't strike me as derivitive or just, you know, there and not really eye catching....

Porsche Design GmbH in Austria

Porsche is actually German, not Austrian.
In Europe, Porsche designes many things such as Wallets, Sun Glasses - even Harley Davidson Motorcycles. I like their design products /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

I think they look cool. They kind of follow the G5's minimalist/industrial look. And besides, there's only so much you can do with CD housing. Whaddaya guys want, something with intricate body molding and flames? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/wink.gif
Grant - A thread that d00d started about installing a CDRW into his MDD G4 got me to wondering if it was possible to replace my aging 12x10x32 Pioneer mechanism in my Que drive. I did a little investigating at xlr8 and found out not only was it possible, but very cheap. For about $40, my three year-old QUE drive now burns at a blazing 52x24x52 using a LiteOn mechanism! (Many LaCie burners use this same, exact mech.) The only thing I'm not sure about is if your older Que has the improved Oxford 911 bridge that my 12x has. (That might be reason enough to get another FW drive altogether.) If your drive does use the 911 bridge, you might consider going this route.

Porsche designs Harley Davidson? /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif
That just seems wrong.
I was surprised that the firewire wasn't available in 800. Also no mention of Oxford 911 or 922.
The design seems inoffensive to me. Sort of Bauhaus / minimalist. Could be worse.

Not quite. Porsche helped to design the motor in the (radically different, not your father's Harley), Harley V-Rod.

/forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/grin.gif Ah, that's more like it. Shall we wax nostalgic over the days of "Zen and the Art of Motorcycle Maintenance"?
Nah.

Sue, I think that FW800 for CDRW drives would be pointless since they probably don't even saturate the FW400 bus. Also, the Oxford 922 chipset is more costly, so we would have to pay more.
Phil, The Lacie D2's definitely use the Lite-on mechanism. it looks like you can get the drive itself for about $40. here is a refurb at newegg.com for $29.

The first link dropped me directly to the hard drives page. Guess I wasn't focusing on the CD-RWs since we have a perfectly good one of those. Our recent acquisition of a Powerbook with a superdrive gives me other things to dream about.
Anyway, I associate Porsche with costliness and speed. Hence, the bafflement.
