Here LaCie's page with the shiny drives http://www.lacie.com...ge.htm?id=10032
They seem LIKE they match the G5

I've seen people post about how great all the Porsche designed PC stuff is, but I've yet to see something of theirs that didn't strike me as derivitive or just, you know, there and not really eye catching....

Porsche Design GmbH in Austria
Porsche is actually German, not Austrian.
In Europe, Porsche designes many things such as Wallets, Sun Glasses - even Harley Davidson Motorcycles. I like their design products /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif

Grant - A thread that d00d started about installing a CDRW into his MDD G4 got me to wondering if it was possible to replace my aging 12x10x32 Pioneer mechanism in my Que drive. I did a little investigating at xlr8 and found out not only was it possible, but very cheap. For about $40, my three year-old QUE drive now burns at a blazing 52x24x52 using a LiteOn mechanism! (Many LaCie burners use this same, exact mech.) The only thing I'm not sure about is if your older Que has the improved Oxford 911 bridge that my 12x has. (That might be reason enough to get another FW drive altogether.) If your drive does use the 911 bridge, you might consider going this route.

That just seems wrong.
I was surprised that the firewire wasn't available in 800. Also no mention of Oxford 911 or 922.
The design seems inoffensive to me. Sort of Bauhaus / minimalist. Could be worse.

Phil, The Lacie D2's definitely use the Lite-on mechanism. it looks like you can get the drive itself for about $40. here is a refurb at newegg.com for $29.

Anyway, I associate Porsche with costliness and speed. Hence, the bafflement.
