what do i need to do to network 2 mac? i know a bit stupid to ask this...
i own 2 beige G3, one running OSX and the other runing OS9.22.
i tot mac has built-in ethertalk card, so i connected my 2 mac via a ether talk cable, i activated the file share for both mac, i set appletalk to ethernet on control panel, but they did not functional. ( i go chooser click on the appleshare but i saw nothing).
am i have to purchase a router (something like ether hub to connect both mac?) or is there any suggestion which cost me lesser, thank you for any advise.

Apple KBase article on Ethernet cabling two Macs (scroll down). Be sure to check the link to "Macs that require cross-over cables" to be sure your G3's will work with "straight-thru" CAT5 cables.

Apple KBase Article for setting up file sharing is OS 9.
Apple KBase article for setting up file sharing on OS X.

Here's a file sharing outline I wronte once (and I presume is still valid) to supplement those Apple KBase articles:
OS 9:
Server:
From the Apple Menu open the Control Panel "AppleTalk" and set it to Built-in Ethernet if it is not already.
From the Apple menu open the Control Panel "File Sharing". You will need to know the Owner Name, Computer Name, and password from this dialog. Since the password isn't displayed, if you don't know it, set it now. Then click "Start" under "File Sharing:"
In the Finder click on your hard disk icon ("Macintosh HD" or whatever you renamed it to) and pick File:Get Information>Sharing. Click "Share this item and its content". The privileges should show your owner name with read and write (represented by a little icon with eyeglasses and a pencil." No need for any other privileges.
Client:
From Apple menu select the Chooser.
Click on the AppleShare icon.
The name of your Server should appear in the "Select a File Server:" box. Double-click it, and enter the user name and password for the Server. A list giving the hard disk name should appear. Select the hard disk from the server. An icon representing that disk should appear on the Finder desktop.
OS X:
Server:
From System Preferences select the Sharing application. Under File Sharing click Start.
From System Preferences select the Network application. The "Show" list should be "Built-in Ethernet" and click the AppleTalk tab, then click the "Make Appletalk active" checkbox.

Client:
From Finder, select "Connect to Server" on the "Go" menu. Locate your server under Appletalk, select it and click Connect. Enter the Owner Name and password for the Server. The icon of the Server's hard disk should appear on the Finder desktop.

You only have to set up the server side once - File Sharing should stay on unless you explicitly turn it off.
