I just purchased my first Mac (emac 1gig, 512mg, rath 7500, superdrive) and want to do a little gaming. I'm completely new to the Mac and games so I was hoping someone could tell me what equipment I might need to do some light gaming and what are some good entry-level action-type games. Any help is appreciated.

for a first person shooter: Jedi knight II, i just ordered it ( cant wait for it to come! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif) after playing the demo. The demo was VERY cool. you can download it at www.macgamefiles.com I really dont like First person shooters but this one is cool cause' u get to use a lightsaber/forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/cool.gif
for a stragedy game: Warcraft III, this is the best stragedy game EVER. I would highly recommend getting the expansion: The frozen throne.

If you end up getting Warcraft, you can save yourself the trouble and get the Warcraft Battle Chest, which combines Warcraft III and The Frozen Throne.
If you're looking for first person shooters, I'd also recommend taking a look at Aspyr's Mac version of Medal of Honor: Allied Assault, but I'd probably pass on the expansion pack Spearhead. It wasn't great on the PC and its Mac conversion has been the source of complaints about performance problems.
Also, MacSoft's Unreal Tournament 2003 is great, especially with a recently released patch that speeds things up and no longer requires the CD to be in the drive.

For entry level I would try
http://www.macmame.com/
They have great oldies like Ghouls 'n Ghosts and other earlier classics.

UT, WCII, Descent 3, all work well on my iBook here (700 Mhz G4).
It's not really action, but Escape Velocity Nova is a darn good game. So are most games over at AmbrosiaSW. Escape Velocity and EV Override are also very good games (although getting old, and not quit as flashy as EVN, the newest of the three)
The old ones may not have the fancy graphics, but old games have a certain "style" about them. And they're more runeable on more machines. grin
