Hi,
I just installed X11 0.3 and now want to get some apps with fink. But no matter which app I want to install, fink informs me that it "Failed: no version info available for ... ".
Double-clicking on a name in FinkCommander, I am told things like "Error. Could not open file(s) /sw/fink/dists/stable/main/finkinfo/unknown/esound-common- .info"
I use OS 10.2.8 on an ibook 500Mhz with 384MB.
I'd appreciate any suggestions.

I have no X11 expertise, but here are a couple of links:
O'Reilly's X11 page
Apple's Unix forum

The most recent X11 is 1.0 for Panther released 10/28/03, so there may be something between 0.3 and 1.0 available. The most recent Fink is 0.16.2 released 11/09/03 but compatible with Jaguar (and "should be" with Panther).

If you have identified a bug, SourceForge wants to know.

Thanks for the links, they have some pretty useful information there. Unfortunately, I still can't install any apps, though. When trying to install the gimp with "sudo apt-get install gimp", I am told that:
Can't exec "/usr/bin/nm": No such file or directory at /sw/lib/perl5/Fink/VirtPackage.pm line 234.

You might want to run `apt-get -f install' to correct these:
Sorry, but the following packages have unmet dependencies:
gimp: Depends: gimp-shlibs (= 1.2.4-11) but it is not going to be installed
xfree86: Conflicts: system-xfree86 but 2:4.3-1 is to be installed
xfree86-shlibs: Conflicts: system-xfree86 but 2:4.3-1 is to be installed
E: Unmet dependencies. Try 'apt-get -f install' with no packages (or specify a solution).
Trying to install it with "fink install gimp" results in the following:
rm -rf audiofile-0.2.3-4
mkdir -p /sw/src/audiofile-0.2.3-4
gzip -dc /sw/src/audiofile-0.2.3.tar.gz | /sw/bin/tar -xf -

I have X11 installed, but it seems as if fink doesn't realize this, even though system-xfree86 is marked as installed (but when I try to delete it, I am informed it can't be deleted because it's not installed).

HoopDoc, you need to install the OS X developers tools. FINK can't find the compilers and other tools, that's what the errors mean (eg. it can't find gcc).

Yeah, you need to install the stuff on disk 4 of Panther before you install fink.
