I'm looking into buying my first Mac laptop. I don't use any memory-intensive programs except Photoshop, but I do use Photoshop quite intensively.
Would a tricked-out 12" iBook have sufficient speed? Or should I go for the Powerbook?
Additional consideration: I'm a field scientist, so the extra sturdiness of the iBook is appealing.
Thanks very much!

An iBook would probably do you well now that they have G4s. But I would consider a tricked out 12" powerbook instead, it's just a little faster and has room for more memory. And if you ever want to use photoshop when not on the field, you can plug it into an external monitor and have more workspace.
Just my 2 cents.

ilyanassa,
What are you going to use to store your images on, CDs or an external HD. If your planning on using CDs I'd suggest you get a PB with a SuperDrive espicially if your working with files with muliple layers which can easly run over 100MB each. I just find it easier to use two DVD, one for future use and one for emergencies over using a dozen CDs.

kaycee and mike_cary, thank you for your advice.
I usually use CDs to store my images. I never thought about storing data on DVDs -cool! Thanks!
Just so I'm clear: iBooks cannot be plugged into an external monitor, but PBs can?
And, in your opinion, the extra ooomph of the PB is worth both the extra $800 or so, and the lesser sturdiness?
Again, thanks so much for all your help!

iBooks can be plugged into an external monitor, but only "mirror" the portable's screen...the Powerbooks enable one giant desk top between monitors, useful for storing Photoshop tools, etc. Supposedly, ,the iBook is "disabled" from acting like a Powerbook, but I haven't seen how easy it is enable it...

Hi,
What mac-Ale is referring to is this . Apparently it allows you to change your resolution and allow the iBook to be more than a mirror on an external monitor.
