i just insalled panther on my g4-800 imac and i am absolutely loving it.. i did a clean insall and everything is working fine... the overall speed of the os is faster and i am noticing faster application launch times... the only complaint/issue that i have is that i have noticed some lag in 2 processes in specific, trash emptying and ichat... i am not sure if this is due to the quartz rendering engine or what, but whenever i drag item to the trash, or right click and trash them, the trash sound comes and there is a CONSIDERABLE delay until the actual icon disappears.. this always happens, regardless of what i am trashing or where it is... i am having a similar problem with ichat.. you know when you are logged on but all the windows are closed, if a buddy writes to you one gets this nice little bubble in the top right corner... well that is very choppy to appear compared to as it was in jag... in jag, it was a smooth little "pop"... and in this, it clips up like hell, everytime... and then when i click the bubble to accept the window, it getts shoppy again before it changes into the brushed metal window... anyone got similar issues or solutions??? thanks in advance...

Looks like Norton S'Works 3 or TechTools Pro4 is required. Everything else working fine?
Actually - before shelling out on either utility - although very worthwhile - try resetting the PRAM and NVRAM.
Option/Command/P/R - at/before boot chime - hold down until a second one is made.
Control/Command/O/F - screen turns grey with black text - type in the following:
reset-nvram {press return key}
reset-all {press it again}
The Mac should auto continue booting - if not, then type "macboot" OR "restart-n" {press return key}.
See if that has any effect.

ok just before writing this, i started experiencing some other problems... my library folder in my home diervtory took on a new icon for itself, actually nothing... it was a blank space with the label "library" below it... then i went to the get info thing from right clicking it and clikced once on the icon (or missing icon in this instance) and pressed delete... and guess what, it turned into an airport base station... it was the wierdest thing that i have ever seen... pressing delete after that didnt do jack... then i verified permissions, and repaired permissions, and restarted and voila... everything back to normal... even the lag in things moving to the trash are gone... for now... last time even when i repaired permissions, it was corrected temporarily, but then the problems returned... it's no big deal, but panther is acting really quarky... eventhough i did an erase and install....

ok, i just noticed something.... tell me how it is working on your system... when i have some stuff on the desktop and move it to the trash, then there is a delay in the time that it actaully goes into the trash... but when i delete the same files form the finder, the get removed immediateley... and i can actaully see that the finder files get moved to the trash and that they are still on the desktop behind the finder for a while before the go.... is this normal???

A very slight difference, which could be contributed to the dock being hidden - so as it's in view when dragging and dropping into the trash, it's not until it disappears again, before Finder is updated. But you're talking about 3-5/10ths of a second.
Like I said, try the new user account option and see if the results are the same - it'll help narrow down which part of the OS is having a problem - system or user side.

thanks for the help, but i think that i am not really explaining the exact problem too well... there isnt a delay in the finder bein updated, it's the desktop... if i trash something on the desktop from the finder, it's fine... but when i drag something, aynthing, from the desktop itself directly to the trash, that's when i see the delay, in the desktop icon on the desktop to disappear... while the same icon in the finder (desktop section) is already gone... one would imagine that it would take the finder a bit of time to be updated.. in fact, i am having a lag time on the desktop icons behind the finder....
anyways, i tried making a new user, and the same thing happened.... thanks again...

You know what, the same thing happens on my system with the icon taking a while to dissapear off the desktop. I dont think its really a big problem. Actually, I didn't even take much notice of it untill you mentioned it. It's probably a minor rendering glitch that they'll sort out in one of thier updates.
