I share my desktop mac's ethernet connection with my Albook via 2 airport cards (no base station). It works flawlessly. I also turn on file sharing and share files between the 2 macs like this.
My question is this: File sharing does not seem to work unless I have a shared internet connection going. For example, if I just try to create a computer-to-computer network, the macs see each other, but I cannot connect to either via a server. Must you share an internet connection in order to share files?
Am I missing something? What, then, would a computer-to-computer setup be used for, if not for this?
I already found out the hard way (and wasted hours troubleshooting) that you cannot use internet sharing with the firewall turned on...
Thanks

No, having an Internet connection is not require to simply share files between two computers hooked-up on via an Adhoc wireless network. What kind of file sharing are you doing? There's many ways to share files in OS X: nfs, smb, ftp, afp... The IPs need to be on the same subnet obviously, which if they see each other at all is correct.
Yes, the firewall needs to be disabled for the service you want to use in order for it to work.

When you connect both computers to the internet, they receive an IP address, via DHCP most likely, which allows them to also talk to each other. Without the internet connection, you need to either manually assign them an IP address, or turn on AppleTalk to network.
If you want to assign an IP address, set up two locations in the Network control panel, one for the internet connection, which uses DHCP, and one for the local connection, which will use Manuall assigned IP. Local networks when not connected to the internet use IP addresses in the range ->192.168.1.1 => 192.168.1.100, with a subnet of 255.255.255.0
1. Create a new network location.
2. Under TCP/IP, at the Configure IPv4 choose "Manually"
3. Assign one computer the IP address of 192.168.1.5 and the other computer an IP of 192.168.1.6
4. Assign both a subnet mask of: 255.255.255.0
Change between the two network location settings depending on whether you want the internet or the local network.
