I am a very recent convert to Mac and for the most part I'm absolutely satisfied...so much so that I kick myself for not making the jump sooner.
Anyway, I would like to import my checking account register into Quicken 2004 but I can't figure out how to do it. My bank is Bank of America - Military Bank. From my accounts page online I can export my register as an EXPORT.QFX file. How do I get this into Quicken...or can I. Is there a better way?
I have applied for Quicken Bill Pay but I'm waiting for the verification process to complete.
I have an iMac 17" with Superdrive, 512mb RAM, and AirPort Extreme Card installed. Thanks, -Roy

It has been my experience that you pretty much can't import QFX to Quicken Mac. This is despite the fact that there is an import QFX menu item.
The best bet for Mac is to download data using QIF and then import it into Quiken.
For one account I use VPC and Quicken Windows to download QFX and then I export it to QIF and import this to Quicken Mac.
If I am wrong and someone has been able to do this from some financial site I would sure like to hear about it. (Too bad that Intuit isn't following this AND fixing some of the many many bugs in Quicken Mac.)
Good Luck

Based on the lack of responses I guess your experience must be right...I'm out of luck. I'm not sure that I want to get into the VPC thing. When I made the jump to Mac I did it with both feet.

Here are some things I have found to work:
Some online accounts have a button to check for Quicken download. Beside it is a dropdown menu. Open it and select .QIF format. .QFX files are for Windows. Default is usually something for Windows users.
Some programs will not download using Safari but will if using Internet Explorer.
Contact the customer service for the account you are tring to import. Sometimes they can help.

You can also use "QIF Master", a separate $16 shareware application to convert CSV files to QIF files. I do this for my securities transactions, and once you've set it up, it's pretty easy. You can also "extract" your transaction history directly from your bank's website into a QIF file. See:

I can import the Web connect files from my bank (USAA) just fine. For Quicken 2003 I had to use Internet Explorer, or modify the creator/type of the file to INTU/WBCN. With Quicken 2004 all I have needed to do is change the suffix of the file to '.qfx' and it is recognized by Quicken.
I also had no trouble with Web connect from my credit union... unfortunately they changed their online banking system and dropped the web connect at the beginning of last year.
I can't say why importing .qfx wouldn't work for other banks - Bank of America is listed among the participating 'Financial Institutions' so presumably you should be able to set up your account to accept Web Connect. (From the 'Accounts' window, select your account, hit the Edit button, then click on the Enable Online Access button and follow the instructions there.) I haven't had any experience with Bank of America though.
I do highly recommend QIF Master for dealing with QIF files - I use it to create QIF for my 401K account.

Thanks to the people who had responded. They have given me some ideas. The program QIF master sounds like something that might be useful and if so we should all probably send in our $16 to keep them going.
Hopefully Intuit is reading some of this and the next version of Quicken will allow seamless import of data from financial institutions into Quicken with easy duplicate identification which is what Web Connect was supposed to do. Until then if anyone else has experience to share please take the time to share your experiences and hopefully work arounds.
Thanks
Bill

Importing a .QFX file worked fine for me (Quicken 2004, Beige G3 500MHz).
I first downloaded the .QFX ("Quicken format") file from my bank with Safari, then from Quicken's File menu, selected "Import Web Connect..." and selected it from where I saved it.

That sounds like Quicken does not recognize the file. Which web browser are you using to download the account information? I use Safari and with Q2004 I have only needed to rename the file from the downloaded name to 'something.qfx' and the icon immediately changes to a Quicken file icon and I can import the file into Quicken. Heck, I even tried creating a dummy text file with just one line of text and naming it 'something.qfx' and Quicken would let me try to import it as Web connect. If you do a 'Get Info' on your EXPORT.QFX file, what does it say?
I suppose this might not work if you are using OS 9, and it could be that the file type and creator codes need to be set on the file. There are a number of applications that will adjust type/creator codes - ResEdit has been mentioned for instance. You can check at versiontracker.com for others. The necessary codes are INTU for creator and WBCN for file type. (Guess I mentioned that before...)

I'm using 10.3.2 and Safari. I'm stumped. Get Info says that it is an Auxillary Quicken File and set to open with Quicken 2004. I'm stumped. -Roy

I just tried a couple of things to see if I could duplicate this problem, and noticed that if I'm not the owner of the file, it is not available for import, even through "Import Web Connect".
To check permissions on the file, do a Get Info and then toggle open the section on owner - it should be your username, with Read and Write turned on. If it's root, or another user, it won't be available to you. You can change permissions back manually by unlocking the Get Info section and choosing your name from the pulldown menu, but if they are wrong this might indicate a deeper problem.
Although OSX is virtually maintenance-free, you should still repair permissions regularly - do this under the First Aid tab in the Disk Utility application, which is found in /Applications/Utilities. Select your boot partition on the left, then hit the Repair Permissions button and let it run until complete. Also, if you are shutting your system down daily, you'll need to download MacJanitor from versiontracker.com. This is a free utility that allows you to manually run the built-in maintenance scripts which would normally run at night while your system is idle.
Please let us know if this helps.

I have been working on this problem on and off for a few months. This is what I believe the problem is:
Bank of America MILITARY bank is not listed as a participating bank for Macs (they are listed for Windows). The error I get when I try to "import web connect" is a "Quicken is currently unable to verify the financial institution information for this download. Please try again later"-- Quicken tries to import the file, goes online to verify some ID number or other bank ID entry, and when it does not find Bank of America Military, it halts the import.
I am pretty sure the problem is not the QFX file or the Mac or the QUICKEN software. It is the bank. Although "Bank of America- all other states" is listed as a participating financial institution, that unfortunately, is not the same as "BOA- military banking." which IS listed as a supporting bank under quicken for windows
I spoke with Military Banking for 1 hour today and got explanations that ranged from:
"Quicken does not work on a Mac"
"You need to run the file conversion program that cam with quicken"
"The file types are different QFX windows is not equal to QFX Mac"
And, finally, "we[bank of america-Military] asked Intuit to add us to the Windows Bank list AND the Mac list- but they did not do it.- you need to contact them."
This has all got me a little angry. I would love it if it is really just a function of QFX to QIF formats and then it would work- I am going to try QIF Master Next and be estatic if that fixes the problem. The most painful outcome is going to be if BOA- Military needs to be added by Quicken as a participating institution- Roy, there are probably only 2 Military Banking Mac users out there to champion this. I am willing to keep at it as long as it takes. If I can't- there is always Gnucash.
