Hi Roy,
QFX files are just ordinary text files, human readable, kind of like HTML (web) files. They can be opened with BBEdit, Word, or even TextEdit, which comes with every OS X Mac. It may be that it has a Windoze text encoding, an extra extension, or some other kind of garbage that makes it unrecognizable to Quicken as a text file.
Try opening the .QFX file you downloaded using TextEdit. If you have permission to read the file, and if it made it across the download OK, you will be able to open it right up and read it. I think TextEdit will at least try to open any kind of file.
If there is a text encoding problem (e.g. Windows/ANSI CR/LF's) then you can save it back as a Mac text file. Just make sure you choose "Make Plain Text" from the Format menu before saving it (if it's already recognized as text, then you'll see "Make Rich Text" in the Format menu). Don't add the ".txt" extension when it asks - keep the .QFX.
Also, in any of your save dialogs, make sure that "file extensions" are checked "visible" where there is a choice, and make sure "Always show file extensions" is checked in the Finder-Preferences. This way you can make sure the file doesn't end up with an extra extension, like "MyAccount.qfx.txt."
That should get the .QFX file into Quicken 2004 if it's readable at all.

bdnewton, that sounds like really discouraging news. From what you say then it is no use to try to import the file into Quicken Mac because it will not work.
I don't think that QIF master converts QFX to QIF though of course you can try. It does CSV to QIF, and it is also a real whiz at converting tables from web pages to QIF.
And of course with QIF you have the problem where it just adds transactions to your account, it doesn't reconcile transactions that are already there like with the Web connect.

I too am a long time Bank of America Military banking customer (started when it was still Fort Sam Houston bank).
This is what I've found out.
1) QFX files work fine on a Mac -- there is no Windows/Mac problem. I use them with two different credit card companies. I am using Q2003. While the program doesn't start automatically like some would lead you to believe, after I d/l the QFX file from my credit card website, I use the Import Web Connect file and everything works our grand.
2) If you use Safari vs IE, you'll need to go in with some sort of tool to change the ownership and type of the file as listed above. IE will do this if you set up the Internect Connect preferences properly and you shouldn't need to do anything else. Safari labels the files as text files or something and doesn't properly tag the creator. I still have a copy of ResEdit on my computer, so I bring up classic and fix the files. After you do this, Q2003 will recognize the files. I saw that this point is moot in Q2004 (cool), but there are so many other problems listed in Q2004, I'm not willing to upgrade yet.
3) BoA Military Bank tech support doesn't have a clue in life about what to do. I've asked them repeatedly for assistance and they've sent me "the instructions" 3 times now on how to fix it: configuring the IE browser internet preferences. While this fixes the issue with Q2003 recognizing the file (bullet 2), it does NOT allow you to import the file.
4) While the military bank is part of Bank of America, they are a completely separate entity inside of Bank of America -- they don't share the same rates, programs OR web servers as the regular civilian Bank of America.
5) QFX files look like they are in an XML format (database export format using by web-based databases; bears a lot of resemblance to HTML). The problem is the bank id code listed near the top.
6) For whatever reason, Intuit keeps a seperate list of banks that work online for Windows and Macs. Bank of America - Military Bank is not listed on the Mac side. Therefore, Quicken for Mac doesn't recognize the bank id code when it tries to import the file. You get the error as described above. I talked to Intuit about this. They said it's the bank's problem. I had hoped that when BoA- Military Bank had upgraded their servers last summer (the new bill pay etc.), they would've fixed this problem. Alas, alak.
7) I talked with BoA about this .. see bullet 3 for their canned respone /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif
8) Since so many other banks now offer online banking, I'm seriously considering changing banks. I don't really need any of BoA - Military Banks services anymore. It's just a pain to change banks since I've got so many things tied into it. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif
9) I've been looking how to extract the XML data in the QFX file into something else that I could import into Q2003. It really torks me off to have 2 years works of information sitting there in a digital form but not being able to use it and instead having to manually type in all that information (I'm a little behind on my bookkeeping). Anyone worked out how to extract the XML data or convert it? There is no way to d/l a QIF file from the bank website.

I use Q2003 and OSX10.3
If I try and download with safari Quicken does not recognize the .qfx extension, it is grayed out and I cannot use it
however if I use Internet Explorer to connect to the bank and down load the file Q2003 does recognize it as a .qfx file and all the benefits of using it over a .qif download
my bank does not support direct connect (washington mutual) but .qfx downloads are the next best thing
I hope this helps

Brian - regarding your request for extracting the data from a QFX file... the latest versions (>= 4.0) of QIF Master now offer support for OFX/QFX translation to QIF. Guess I have to update my previous comment! I gather from the QIF Master website that the author John Woodward has had limited sources of QFX/OFX to test and so there could be problems with the files from some banks. I know from experience that the author is very good about responding to people's suggestions and helping with problems. So this may be may be something that can help you out.

Saw a Safari Q here and found this fix:
thought this was a good addition: a friend just worked through gettting
.qfx's to work with Safari. Bottom Line: some applescript attached to a folder.

I can't believe Safari still doesn't handle this. I'll stick to Jaguar, IE and Q2002! /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif

New Community Bank user.
I cna't believe it took Community bank this long just to get online.... Then they say that Safari can't access (of my 5 accounts, this is the only one that Safari can't get in). THEN I can't believe I have to run the login 2 times on IE to get in (this has occured each time I have used it)
As for importing the QFX, what needs to be done to get Community Bank on the list of acceptable institutions?

So much for QIF Master... it is a disaster!
All it seemed to do is to double everytransaction that was already there. it will be nice when software starts by giving soem instructions that make since AND then proceed to do what really makes sense. I guess it could be worse, but I am about to convert to 2005 as soon as it comes out.
If anyone knows how to get the doubled stuff out without doing it singly, I would appreciate the help.
