1 year ago I purchased a mint condition Blueberry Ibook (300mhz, 6 GB, 32 mb RAM) for what I am pretty sure was a steal at 310$. I am currently running OS 8.6 but will upgrade soon.
The problem is, when I surf the internet with more than one page open the computer is incredably slow. I am quite impressed with the speed when only one page is open. But God help me if a pop up add should appear, then it would usually take 5 to 8 seconds just to get to the add to close it.
What I would like to know is, if I upgrade the RAM to say.... above 256mb, would this enable me to surf the web with multiple pages open and not have my ibook seize up on me.
Thank You

Hi
Upgrade your RAM right away! I'm pretty sure the 8.6 system takes about 32MB normally, so I'm quite sure you're using virtual memory, in which is going to be real slow.
A 256MB upgrade from Other World Computing (OWC) is $42
I would also make sure you have all your OS updates and turn off virtual memory (Apple Menu-->Control Panels-->Memory) once you upgrade the RAM.

You can put a 512 MB PC66 3.3v 144-pin SO-DIMM in that computer. since there is only one slot, don't mess around with the 256, just jump directly to the 512. You won't be sorry.

I have a question. the original iBooks (clamshell) have an Apple limit of 256MB for the available RAM slot. Yet a have seen some stores selling 512 ram for these models. Can you confirm that indeed it works to put the 512 ram there. thanks

This is posted from an indigo clamshell iBook with 576 MB RAM. It works.
The limits Apple lists are current when the computer was produced. It often happens that newer RAM is subsequently produced with larger capacities in the same form factor. One source of information on which computers can access memory beyond Apple's recommendations (which are never revised) is Mac Tracker.
