Just got back from the Apple Store near me, I purchased my first mac:
17" iMac - 1.25ghz/80gb/512mb
20 gb IPOD
MS Office
I took my IPOD home but not the IMAC. I have to pick it up tomm because I chose to have 512mb installed in the technician accesible slot only so when I choose to add more ram, I can max out at one gb, not 756.
Im 24 years old and I have been using pcs all my life, all I can say is that I cant wait to play with this thing. The packaging on the IPOD is sweet itself.
Any advice for my and my first MAC?

Congrats.
Some advice: Its iPod and iMac, and in general, its Mac, short for Macintosh, to get you up to speed on the lingo. Switching from Windows to Mac OSX is a little like learning to drive a right-hand steering car. All the utility is there, but some things may seem a little strange. Just be sure to some here with your questions!

Congratulations
I've enjoyed Macs for the last 10 years .. but OS10 has taken the experience to a whole new level of elegance and functionality.
For peace of mind .. I would recommend that you buy Applecare before the end of your first year of ownership. It's not expensive and it's nice for the additional phone support if nothing else.
General comments .. unless you have to .. stay away from adding a bunch of new fonts .. they can be a possible source of difficulties. Also "third party system hacks".
For smooth trouble free operation ... get Disk Warrior and run it once every couple of months .. although you might hear otherwise from others on this forum as to this necessity .. it can't hurt.
Also ... Macaroni ... just set it and forget it.
Macaroni
Macaroni is a tool which handles regular maintenance for Mac OS X's Unix core. Normally these tasks run on a regular schedule, in the middle of the night. However if you don't leave your Mac on all night, they never run. Your Mac won't wake from sleep to handle this. Macaroni solves this problem. If a scheduled maintenance task is not run when it's normally scheduled, Macaroni automatically ensures that it's run at the next opportunity, whenever the Mac is on. Repairs permissions also, on a weekly basis.
If you don't have a printer ... Canons run great in OS10 ...
Don't forget to drag your ipod icon to the trash, or "eject" before you disconnect.
Happy Computing ... I wish I had your machine ..

hey welcome to the mac:
the only application that i would recommend using once in a while is onyx. its free and does imple system mantience jobs, which is really all you need. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smirk.gif you neevr need to defragg, you dont need virus software, no "internet secruity" thats built in.
welcome ot the mac!

There is one thing, though, that you really need to know how to do.
When your friends get viruses on Windows, laugh maniacally /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/smile.gif
I would kill for a 17 inch iMac...all I got is an 800 mhz G3 iBook /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/frown.gif

HI,
I just got my first Apple last week, a 20" iMac, 512MB, 160HD and I Love it!!! All I can advise is to have fun with it because it just works - no more blue screen of death. It is easy to set up and easy to use. I've yet to crack the manuals but I've done all sorts of iMovie and iPhoto stuff. I've also used iTunes a few times, which is where you'll want to go to load up your iPod. The screen is amazing and I've yet to encounter any problems, unlike my first PC which arrived DOA. The iLife package is so intuitive and well integrated that I wonder why I waited so many years to make the switch.
Actually I do have one thing to add - I signed up for .Mac which is a great. Very useful for the Mac. Enjoy it, I'm sure you will.
Why did I wait to switch? 20' iMac, 512MB, 160HD, Bluetooth
