Safari's a Come-Home Dog

I'm using Safari 1.2 on a Dual 1.25 G4 Powermac. When I first opened it, it automatically went to an Apple web site, which Apple had obviously set in advance. I find it convenient to set my home page to the National Weather Service for my home town -- you immediately get a 5 to 7 day forecast, up to the minute, and with no pop-ups or advertisements.
That shouldn't be a problem. The Help menu tells you how to set a new home page -- first load the page you want for a home page, then go to Preferences, General, and click on "Set To Current Page."
So I did that, and it worked. When I clicked on the "Home" button it went to the weather report. Just to be sure, I quit Safari, opened it again, and there was the weather report.
But it only lasted for a few hours. When I came back to Safari the next day, it opened to Apple's web page again.
I've repeated this about five times now -- I change the home page, and it works for a few hours, but then Apple's home page comes back again.
What kind of sneaky trick is Apple playing on us?

Not sure what's happening on your end, but my Safari happily loads whatever I tell it to as the home page (currently that's blank, but I've used other sites in the past without any issues).
Does the same thing happen with other users on the same machine?

You can create a new user for troubleshooting purposes; this will help you determine if the problem is systematic, or specific to just your primary user. If the problem goes away with another user, then I'd recommend deleting the Safari preferences file for your main user; it's possible it's been corrupted in some way that prevents your changes from sticking...

I have never had any problems with that but my homepage is
http://apple.netscape.com/apple.adp
I think it came default
I don't really pay attention to it though. It just adds a little color to it than just plain old about:blank. I should have the Macworld fourms as my homepage really because that is where I spend most of my time now.

as the warning message says when you choose "reset safari",
"Resetting Safari erases your browsing history, empties the cache, clears the Downloads window, and removes cookies. It also removes any saved names and passwords or other AutoFill text and clears Google search entries."
in other words, no: resetting safari will not delete your bookmarks. i've done it many times.

In reply to:
If I reset it in the Safari menu, will that also erase my bookmarks?

Hi Dick,
Didn't see this mentioned, or I missed it. With Safari launched go under Safari's Menu-> Preferences -> click the left tab General ->Home Page: and type it in there. I don't use Safari as my default browser, but it does keep the site I want when launching.
