I set up an iMac as a multi-user Panther, with . If iTunes is launched under an account, another user cannot access it untill the original user quits it. I find this not only annoying but also implausible
Can anyone verify if iTunes or any other app really needs to be quit before another user can access it?

Well, yes, Tom, you are quite right. Two users can't both listen at music at the same time. The thing is, with the new fast user switching, there shouldn't be a need to quit a running app in a user's environment, right? This is is true for all apps I've tried; one can leave a browser, Mail, and all sort of applications running and simply log out. Imaging if this user (a kid) just leaves iTunes along with other apps open. Does that mean no one alse can use iTunes untill that user logs in and quits it? I don't know, but I feel something is wrong here.

I have a 14 (almost 15 year old) as one of my users... Do what I did - Buy an ipod for yourself, problem solved (enjoy your music). The subject line of your post suggests you are having a multi-User question. We have a saying in the unix world - Not 'can it be done?' but How can it be done. Take the most sensible way out.

No iPod involved with either user on this iMac. The iPod is strictly tied to my Ti400. It's just kids who like the privacy of an individual account and the ability to play encoded music.
Does anyone know if having a shared iTunes music library is the cause of all this?

Google to the rescue. A quick search on Google for "itunes multiple users" brought up this entry on Rob's excellent site.
