Kazoo:
I applied the iDVD 4 updater today and burned two DVDs with absolutly NO PROBLEMS!!!
Burned my 1:39 movie in about 2 hours!! 25 Chapters and all!!!
It worked just like it always should have!!
Try it and let me know if it works for you!!!

I cannot burn a DVD. I have gone through ten Memorex 4x dvds and one Maxell dvd ... the Maxell actually works at the beginning but cannot go to the next chapter marker ... beach ball time until force quit time. Can I take iDVD 3, even though I have iLife 4 installed and install it over iDVD 4? Do I have to manually uninstall iDVD 4.0. (I am using the 4.0.1 update, but still doesn't work.)
I did burn one Apple dvd but I cannot believe only Apple will work. It seems too odd.
Any advice gratefully appreciated. /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/mad.gif /forums/ubbthreads/images/graemlins/confused.gif

You can install iDVD 3 and keep iDVD 4 installed.
Use your install DVD that came with you MAC to restore software.
Then click until you get to the point where you can choose which programs you want to install.
Click only iDVD 3.
It installs in a separate folder in your Applications folder.
You can run it from there.
DO NOT uninstall iDVD 4. If you do, and then reinstall it later without "upgrading" iDVD 3 you'll lose the "3" templates.
I did that and I had to reinstall all of the iDVD stuff to get everything back.
I'm not clear on what kind of MAC you have so I can't make any other suggestions at the moment.
Before iDVD 4 update, iDVD 3 was the only way I could burn a DVD-minus the iDVD4 bells and whistles.
Good luck:
Rich

Thanks, Rich:
I have a 1.8 single processor G5 with a gig and a half of memory. The dvd I keep trying to burn, unsuccessfully in iDVD 4.0.1 is from an iMovie I made from vhs footage I imported through my dv camera's analog to digital conversion capability. It only has two chapter markers and no transitions and effects. I am merely trying to save old tapes.
THis Program Memory Area Update Failure message ( followed by: 0x73, 0x04.) is a real drag and I can only think it is a bug in iDVD 4, not saved by the update.
Don't know.

As you can see above, I had all kinds of problems until the update came out.
Since then I've burned three iMovie 4 movies each was over 90 minutes in length and had 25 chapter markers. I used a Formac DV bridge to bring VHS footage into iMovie.
I have read that some have been successful pulling the non-Apple memory out and running only with the orginal Apple supplied memory. Some problem with the non-Apple stuff.
Try that.
Did you try and burn this movie BEFORE the iDVD 4 update.
If so you may want to re-encode the movie BEFORE taking another shot at burning it.
Let us know how you made out.
Good luck..

Hey Rich,
I finally got a little time to play with iDVD again, my project burned great after I applied the update. It sure is nice having it work like it should.

Great to hear. I've burned a couple of DVDs now, and had no issues.
Now....need to face the 10.3.3 upgrade.......

Hi Rich,
I'm trying to reinstall iDVD3 from the software install and restore disc I got with my flatpanel iMac. But the button I need to select custom install is greyed out--I can only do a basic install which will reinstall everything. Any ideas on what I need to do to reinstall just iDVD3?
Thanks!

Hi Cindy:
Not sure what you are trying to accomplish?
Why are you trying to reinstall iDVD 3?
The encoding problem with iDVD 4 was solved by an updater from Apple.
Tell me more....

Hi Rich,
I don't have iDVD4, just 3. It worked fine for three previous projects, but the one I'm working on now won't burn. It gets stuck in stage 4, doesn't quit or crash, but doesn't finish burning. I've tried a bunch of fixes and nothing has worked so far, so I was going to try a reinstall as a last resort, but I can't get the install disc to let me just install iDVD3. Ideas?
Thanks!
Cindy

In reply to:

Cindy:
When I re-installed iDVD it was the first time I ever reinstalled anything in OS X. In fact, it was the first and the last.
Anyhow, I remember as I worked through the menus, as long as I clicked, (I think it was custom install), each menu I went through after that kept looking to me like it would reinstall everything, but I finally got to a point where it asks which programs you want to reinstall. There was a checkbox next to the different iApps.
You should:
Back up your hard drive first
Load the CD (or DVD) and start the reinstall process
Continue to click through the menus until you get to the customization section
Then click the box next to the iDVD program
Now, I gotta warn you, I've only done this once so backing up is critical in case I'm giving bad advice.
I also don't know what kind of MAC you have or what system you are running, so I'm not clear if that will matter.
If this was OS 9, I could walk you through better than tech support, but it isn't.
Good luck.....let me know how you make out..

Thanks Rich--I probably didn't go far enough for fear of installing everything. I didn't have to reinstall as my last fix finally worked. I freed up more hard drive space (39G for a 4G project) and that did the trick.
Another question though--my project looks perfect when I preview it on iDVD, but has big audio gaps and some choppy video at transitions in the burned disc. I've tried most of the fixes to no avail for this. Does iDVD4 get rid of these audio glitches?

Unfortunatley, I had not worked with iDVD3 a whole lot. I have worked quite a bit with iDVD4 and am not having the audio problems you describe.
I guess one could assume they are fixed??
Glad you are up and working again...

Rich,
Thanks! I'll probably bite the bullet and upgrade. After 4 days of struggle to burn this last disk, it was disappointing to see the poor quality of the end product due to the transition glitches.
Nice machine by the way--I'm jealous!
