This is quite an important problem to me so if anybody coould help I would be really grateful.
I am having trouble getting my iBook (which is running Panther) to write in Greek. (Or most other languages.) So first, I gather that Microsoft Word doesn't support unicode? Does Apple Works?
Next: if I try to insert something from the character palette, it usually does not insert, or inserts as something completely random, e.g. an epsilon looks like '-r (or something - usually with non-standard characters; i.e. accented) - this happens even in TextEdit, which otherwise is a wonderful program and seems to understand just about anything. (This non-insertion even with a valid font selected.)
I actually managed to get through to the people at Apple Support about this, and they said to install the extra fonts from the third install disc, afer which all would be well. I did and it isn't. Half the problem seems to be that (usually) the flag icon for Greek is ghosted and I can't select the keyboard. TextEdit is my saviour, because here I can - the problem is I can only access about a third of the characters I want to use by the keyboard.
(I also tried downloading a program called Mellel which everyone told me was absolutely brilliant for languages - but is even worse than MS Word.)
The last thing is the one you'll probably know most what is going on with: why do not all of my fonts show up in the font lists in my various programs (I have no idea how to get to them)? I don't like font book: it strikes me as being more logical to have the font software and text editor in the same program. So, for example, when I finally managed to download a non-unicode greek font, it sits in my font book without me being able to use it. (On the same lines, how do I get rid of the millions of fonts I don't use from the font lists?)
I don't understand why my poor little ibook is having such difficulty with other languages (I thought that all that would be over when I left the world of Windows PCs).
(Having said that, I am very, VERY impressed by the ease of typing in Japanese, which is the other language I have to communicate in.)
Well ... thank-you!
