A folder of images burned on my 10.2 Mac would mount, but not open, on my Win2K Pro machine. I have done this quite a bit under 10.1.x, so I know it used to work. It no longer works. Ergo, it's broken. The files are not corrupt, the burn was done the same way 100 previous burns were done, Jaguar was a "clean install", etc.

Very clearly, something in the change from pure ISO9660 to HFS+/ISO9660 has caused some sort of issues with some (but not all) Windows machines.

I forgot to bring my trial burn into the office today to see if my work laptop (also Win2K) would read it.

In all fairness, it sounds like it's a real problem for people who are otherwise doing things the "right" way. Some people seem OK though. Really confusing. images/icons/frown.gif I hoped/assumed that this would get sorted out with more time to consider what's going on, but in a few days there's no clear answer or problem even.

I can only suggest for people to submit bug feedback to Apple with a detailed account of your setup, what you did and what you got and let their people sort it out. Make them earn their pay, ya know?

I would be the first to admit that I don't know as much about Windows as I do about Macs, but what is there to know about opening a folder past double-clicking the thing? I can't even get any information on the folder by right-clicking it.

And I have burned more CDs than I care to count, mostly from the Finder.

Sorry you're getting jumped, wes, but this is an aggrivating problem that's a very real issue in the software, not the brainware.

Adding a bit to the mix:

I created three CDs.

The first was a folder full of pictures from my iPhoto Library -- copied the host folder and all contents to a disc. The disc would mount on a PC running XP Home but I couldn't open the folder for love nor money. Tried the other media drive (DVD) and it at least gave me an error when I tried to get Properties for the disc -- it claimed I wasn't connected to a server that held a referring file.

The second contained no folders, only JPEG images. This disc opened properly on the PC and I was able to view the pictures.

The third contained a single folder that had the exact same images I burned to the second disc. This disc mounted but the folder couldn't be opened.

Sooo, it seems what we've learned is that a disc will work as long as it contains no folders.

Looking forward to reading your follow-ups.

Chris

Just to test the theory about folders I tried the same thing and walla I got same probs.
So I then used toast to burn the same info and I can open the folders without any issues on my windows machine.

The last time I tried and thought it worked I did not actually copy a folder just the contents of that folder.

Same results as Mr. Breen.

Actually, I never use DiscBurn anyway. Too slow and cumbersome, IMO. It's a good thing I rely on Toast. I'd have some upset clients if I couldn't burn PC compatible discs.

Judging by all the failed tests, I might guess this is a plot by the CD companies to boost sales. images/icons/wink.gif

You guys are getting the same results I'm reading about in other fora. I seriously doubt that everyone here is running their test on corrupt files or using bad disks. This is a problem with Jag-war.

I'm sticking with 10.1.5 until stuff like this is ironed out. And we should let Apple know we're very unhappy about the loss of functionality.

So Chris Breen, anything new on this issue?

Nothing other than that the problem is well documented across the Web. I can't imagine that Apple will let this one go unfixed.

Apple provides a way to connect to VPN's and other Windows computers so I don't think Apple would intentionally do this so I see a fix soon.

This was on MacIntouch.com today 8/28.

quote:

[10:05 ET] Mac OS 10.2 has a number of bugs in its new DiscRecording code, according to developers, including bad ISO-9660/Joliet directory structures that create problems in Windows 2000 and XP; a bug that can cause crashes while burning discs; an HFS Plus disc glitch covered in an Apple KB article; disc/tray eject bugs; alias/symlink issues and the lack of UDF support. (See also: Mac OS 10.2 DiscRecording developer release notes.)

So we know what it is. Hopefully, there's a fix coming soon.
