C'mon guys, we cant just sit around and accept the demise of the smiley startup Mac. This is something that is fundamental to the whole Macintosh concept. If you agree please let Apple know your feelings through the feedback channels.

We gotta change this one.

Personally I do not miss the "Smiley Mac" at all. I like the way that Apple is getting away from the "old school" Mac, and bringing it up to the new.

That is just my opinion though. images/icons/smile.gif

That may be so, but what ever happened to tradition? First Steve got rid of the rainbow apple logo if favor of boring monotone versions. Now he gets rid of the smiling Mac at startup. What is next to go, mom and apple pie? This is just so un-American. images/icons/wink.gif

Seriously though, I think that I do prefer the smiling Mac at startup, but it's really just not that important to me.

I think Apple is repositioning the Mac to give it a more straight-laced and less cheeky appearance for the corporate world. Plus I was glad to see the rainbow Mac logo go, as those rainbow colors are being seen more and more as a symbol of the gay community. No offense to gays, but I don't think Apple would want to have its logo associated with any kind of community. A more benign logo is in their best interest.

No biggie for me...

What I would like to see is real BIOS error messages. Instead of the flashig ? when the computer can't find the OS, how about something like "CANNOT LOAD SYSTEM" or something so you really know what's going on?

The first time I got it (flashing ?) it took me almost an hour to figure it out, having to resort to surfing the Apple site on my PC....

I think the happy Mac was a helluva lot more friendly, to be sure. I don't mind them getting rid of it as much as I mind the very cold and slick replacement. Surely there's a middle ground.

I'm not sure if I miss the smilely face, maybe
replace it with an grey/blue apple logo.
I like the idea of tradition but I'm not into
nostalgia. We have to move on. I think most
die hard loyalists, open source supporters and
resisters to a corporate software mono-culture
secretly derive a vicarious pleasure when one
boots up a Mac. And when I do, I wouldn't mind
at all a legacy smilely face or a least the
Apple Logo. How soon till we here the intel
inside jingle in an Apple commercial. Now a
processor is a processor but it sure would take some getting used to!!! Remember when you
heard the first Quadra start up tone? That
was unique and you never got tired of it. Just
my two cents.

I was just going to start a group to celebrate the demise of the happy mac at startup. The new screen is much better.

That old mac is from the 80's. How do you expect to convince users that you have an up to date system when you are stuck nearly 20 years ago.

The new screen will only serve to help the MAC user base to explode. Which it would have done without their dingbat decision on .mac but that is another story.

May the smily MAC rest in peace.

You want to fist Clarus?

That's a bit disturbing.

Un-American? Thank God!

Anyway, I do kind of miss the smiling mac, but the Apple is really cool. Apple is turning away from the Classic OS, and forging a new path. I believe, when they are done, the 'new' Mac OS won't be anything like the old.

MACdonalds is using the smiley face, so maybe Apple didn't want to be put in the same category as McDonalds.
