I have just purchased an extremely compact 3.5" aluminum, external, 'fanless,' FireWire drive. I remember reading in another forum that larger drives with large caches may overheat in these compact cases. I plan to install a spare Western Digital 80GB w/ 8MB cache drive in this enclosure. Will heat be an issue?
If so I am considering retrofitting a micro fan (the kind used in some portables) into a spare area at the front of the case. Has anyone done this? Do you think this is a good idea or just a waste of time and effort? If yes, where can tiny 12V fans like this be purchased (estimating 25mm by 8mm would fit fine).

I would go with a fan; I just took a 120 Gig drive out of a "coolmax" aluminum case because it was getting very hot. So hot I think the drive was starting to malfunction. I'll be looking for a case with a fan.
