G5, dual 2.0GHz, dual internal 250 Maxtors; OS 10.3.2
Using Apple's built-in RAID I set up my two internal Maxtors in a mirror RAID, which is backed up routinely (at least once a day) to an external drive.
On at least four occasions over the last several months, when I go to Disk Utility, the RAID is showing "degraded" as the status. On as many occasions, I've had one of the slices refuse to mount (I get the "...disk not recognized by Mac OS --> ignore, initialize, etc." error message).
Why is this failure happening? Is it most likely I have a bum drive? If so, how do I go about determining which one it is (upper or lower drive)? (They are identical, is there something in the Terminal, say, that I can use to decipher which one is failing?) Mac

Mirror RAID continually degraded

Sorry to jump on your post be we have the exact same problem too.
We're using AppleRaid to mirror two 80GB hard disks on our XServer. Over the last tweleve months we've had to rebuild the raid at least 5 times. We've even replaced one of the disks as we thought it may have been faulty. The raid lasted 4 days before the the mirror was degraded again!
Unless there's an update for AppleRaid soon which will resolve this issue I think we'll be purchasing a 3rd party package like SoftRaid!
