Hi
I've read somewhere that Garageband is very demanding of processor power. I want to get an iMac for my family, and I know my kid will love Grageband (typical teenager). I would get the 1.25Ghz 17", and max the Ram. I would like to get 3 years out of the machine, at least.
Any advice / comments? thanks in advance!

A new iMac should work fine with GarageBand.

I think the RAM is more important. Min. system specs listed are only 600 mhz G3, but on my 1 GHz G4 it performs quite slowly. Why? I have the minimum RAM- 256 built in. If I had 512 or a gig it would probably scream. As it is I can not have more than 4 tracks at once.

That imac will be fine for garageband. My friend uses an ibook G3 800 with 640mb ram and garageband works fine.

I have the 1.25 G4 and 512, it's still slow. I think it is definitely the most processor intensive program I have and the only thing I can get to crash on the mac, besides Finder going beserk requiring a restart.
It crashes if you have a track going over 3 minutes or so, even with nothing else open. If you have a bunch of tracks, oh, problems.

My 800mhz PowerBook runs GarageBand GREAT! The key? RAM! At LEAST 512mb. 768mb wouldn't hurt one bit. Go to an Apple Store and mention you want to get a 512mb chip put in and start talking about "deals" they can offer you.
