Option key no longer selects start-up disk.

Last time I tried this particular trick it didn't work. My machine (G4 AGP) got to the screen where installed volumes are shown and then just hung - stopwatch icon ticking away - and got no further. I tried obvious stuff such as restarting and zapping pram. I know you can select the start-up volume from system prefs or control panels (depending on OS). I have my OS9 and OSX volumes on seperate disks and sometimes found this feature useful. Any suggestions please?
