This maybe one of the most pointless topics in the history of this BBS but I need to know this... The spinning "beach ball" looks more like a spinning CD to me... (you know what the backs of the silver cds look like in sunlight when they're spinning) It's not a beachball, why would a computer company use a beach ball? I think it's a CD to tell you it's working the disks are spinning. Or am I crazy?

YOU are the sane one. Everyone else is crazy.

The Spinning CD of Death started out as the Spinning Magneto-Optical Disk of Death from OS X's ancestor, NeXT OS. Apple bought NeXT and the spinning disk came with it.

Ironically, in OS X 10.2, Apple did a 3D job on the Spinning Thing of Death. Now it looks more like...a beach ball! Now everyone else is right and we're the crazy ones...

Eh, can't we just get a little " off, I'm working" message?

It's neither a spinning CD nor a beachball.

Its simply a shape resembling the disk in operation, as with previous versions of Mac OS. Now its rainbow colored, like the apple logo used to be.

Its retro!

When I was like four years old my Dad had an ancient Mac (probably the II) for two weeks at home. I played around it a lot, but if I remember correctly, I displayed a little funky bee when it was busy.

Does anybody else remember this?

How about a flashing sign saying "tell your wife you want to have a faster computer"? images/icons/grin.gif
